MS Black Watch (1971)
MS ''Black Watch'' was a ''Royal Viking Star''-class cruise ship. She was built by Wärtsilä Helsinki Shipyard, Finland for Royal Viking Line as ''Royal Viking Star'', entering service in 1972 as the lines first ship. She has also sailed for Norwegian Cruise Lines as ''Westward'' and Royal Cruise Line as ''Star Odyssey''. As of June 18, 2022 she has been beached for scrapping at Alang, India. History ''Royal Viking Star'' Royal Viking Line was established in 1970 as a joint project between the American businessman Warren Titus and three Norwegian shipping companies (including Kloster Cruises, the owner of Norwegian Cruise Line). The aim of the new company was to offer luxury cruises to destinations around the world as an alternative to Caribbean cruising. For this end the company ordered three purpose-built luxury cruise ships from Wärtsilä Helsinki New Shipyard in Finland. AB Karlstads Mekaniska Werkstad (''trans.'' Karlstad Mechanical Works Ltd), known as Kamewa, was a Swedish manufacturing company in the city of Kristinehamn. Kamewa started as a brand name of the controllable-pitch propellers manufactured by KMW. KMW was founded in the city of Karlstad in 1860. KMW also manufactured pulp and paper machines for paper mills and hydro power turbines. Kamewa was acquired by the British company Vickers plc in 1986. In 1999, Rolls-Royce acquired Vickers. In 2019 the Commercial Marine part of Rolls-Royce was acquired by the Kongsberg group and integrated into its maritime division Kongsberg Maritime. Cruise lines have opted to increase capacity by stretching their current ships. Known as lengthening, the process of enlarging a cruise ship usually includes cutting the ship in half and adding a new midsection, adding more cabins and public areas. Norwegian America Line
The Norwegian America Line ( no, Den Norske Amerikalinje), was a shipping line, originally an operator of ocean liners and cargo ships. Founded in 1910, the company ran a regular transatlantic service between Norway and the United States, and later included a route to East Africa as well. Primarily due to competition from air travel, transatlantic passenger voyages were slowly discontinued during the years. After the Great War, the company was one of Norway’s largest shipping lines, owning a fleet that included 19 vessels, several of which were for commercial cargo transport. After the Second World War heavy ships losses were overcome by the building of new vessels, however the reduction in the passengers’ traffic by sea shifted the company’s focus mainly to the cargo business, including container and bulk shipping from the 1970s. Helsinki New Shipyard
Hietalahti shipyard (also known as Helsinki New Shipyard, fi, Helsingin uusi telakka) is a shipyard in Hietalahti, in downtown Helsinki, Finland. Since 2019, it has been operated by a company named Helsinki Shipyard. History The shipyard, first known as Helsingfors Skeppsdocka ( fi, Hietalahden Laivatelakka) and later as Sandvikens Skeppsdocka och Mekaniska Verkstad ( fi, Hietalahden Sulkutelakka ja Konepaja), was founded in 1865 and delivered its first ship in 1868. It also constructed horse-drawn trams and railroad cars. Wärtsilä bought the parent company Kone ja Silta in the 1930s; it included also the Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku.
