Mária Pekli
Maria Pekli (born 12 June 1972 in Baja, Hungary) is an Australian judoka of Hungarian descent. She was Australian Champion in the u/57 kg division for seven consecutive years, between 1997 and 2003. She won a bronze medal in the lightweight (57 kg) division at the 2000 Summer Olympics, the first Australian woman to win an official Olympic Judo medal (although Sue Williams won a medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics when Women's Judo was a demonstration sport). Along with Cuba's Driulys González and Japan's Ryoko Tamura-Tani, Pekli became in 2008 the first female judoka to compete at five Olympics. The only other judokas to compete at five Olympics are Belgian Robert Van de Walle and Puerto Rican judoka-bobsledder Jorge Bonnet. Baja, Hungary
Baja () is a city with county rights in , southern Hungary. It is the second largest city in the county, after the county seat at Kecskemét, and is home to some 35,000 people. Baja is the seat of the Baja municipality. The environs of Baja have been continuously inhabited since the end of the Iron Age, but there is evidence of human presence since prehistoric times. The settlement itself was most likely established in the 14th century. The 2003 World Judo Championships were the 23rd edition of the World Judo Championships, and were held in Osaka, Japan 11–15 September 2003. Judo competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were held from August 9 to August 15 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. Ryoko Tani
is a retired Japanese female judoka and a politician. Competing in the extra-lightweight (48 kg) class, she won a record seven world titles and five Olympic medals including two golds at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. After her retirement, the International Judo Federation named her "best female judoka ever". In 2010, she was elected to the House of Councillors, the upper house of the Japanese parliament. Early and personal life Ryoko Tamura was born in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka on September 6, 1975. She started judo at the age of seven. She studied literature at Teikyo University and joined Toyota in 1998. Australian National Judo Championships
The Australian National Judo Championships are the highest level of judo competition in Australia. The championships are held annually by Judo Federation of Australia, Judo Australia, and qualified domestic and overseas judoka compete in their respective categories as representatives of their home states or countries. Both the women's and men's championships began in 1956, with the championships being held in Wollongong, New South Wales between 2012 and 2015.
