Mychajlo Dmytrenko
Mychajlo Serhiyovych Dmytrenko ( uk, Михайло Сергійович Дмитренко; November 9, 1908, Lokhvytsi, Poltava, Russian Empire – March 8, 1997) was a Ukrainian-American painter of world recognition. Dmytrenko settled in Detroit and examples of his work can be found there. Along with his other works Dmytrenko was responsible for the interior design of the St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in the East Village, Manhattan between 1977 and 1989. Lokhvytsia
Lokhvytsia ( uk, Ло́хвиця, , ; russian: Ло́хвица, ) is a city in Poltava Oblast (province) of central Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Lokhvytsia Raion (district), and is located on the banks of the Lokhvytsia River. Population: History The name of the river Lokhvytsia, as well as the town, comes from the Old Slavonic word ''lokhve'' which means "salmon". At the time of Kievan Rus' the territory where the town is located was part of Pereyaslav Principality. The precise date of the foundation is unknown. From written records, it can be determined that Lokhvytsia existed prior to 1320. In 1644, Magdeburg rights were granted to the town so that all town issues were to be resolved by a city council, elected by the wealthy citizens. East Village, Manhattan
The East Village is a neighborhood on the East Side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It is roughly defined as the area east of the Bowery and Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. The East Village contains three subsections: Alphabet City, in reference to the single-letter-named avenues that are located to the east of First Avenue; Little Ukraine, near Second Avenue and 6th and 7th Streets; and the Bowery, located around the street of the same name. Fedir Krychevsky ( uk, Федір Кричевський; – July 30, 1947) was an influential Ukrainian early modernist painter. He was the brother of graphic designer Vasyl Krychevsky. Biography Krychevsky was born in Lebedyn, in the Kharkov Governorate of the Russian Empire, to the family of a Jewish country doctor who converted to Orthodox Christianity and married a Ukrainian woman. He graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1901 and the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1910. He traveled in Western Europe for a year, and studied briefly with Gustav Klimt in Vienna. He moved to Kiev, where he served as professor and director at the Kiev Art School from 1914 to 1918. In 1917, he was one of the founders and a rector (from 1920 to 1922) of the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts.
