Athletes from Burma competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The nation sent a small delegation of two athletes and three officials. A military coup occurred in Burma during 8888 Uprising, the day after the Games' opening ceremony. Burma's athletes competed nonetheless, but the country was then absent from the 1988 Summer Paralympics, held just after the Olympics. Khin Khin Htwe (29 November 1967 – 30 September 2021) was a Burmese athlete who competed in the middle-distance events. She represented her country at three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988, as well as two World Championships. In addition, she won multiple medals on regional level. The women's 1500 metres at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea had an entry list of 28 competitors, with two qualifying heats (28) before the final (12) took place on Saturday October 1, 1988. From the gun in the final, Paula Ivan wanted the lead. Mary Slaney and Ivan's teammate Doina Melinte did not want to let her get away. The field behind her looked bunched but the 1:02.52 first lap showed she was serious. This was world record pace, rare for a championship race that usually breaks down into a strategic battle. After the first lap, a small gap began to open. Melinte was the last to maintain contact, perhaps having seen this strategy previously in domestic competition. The Burmese Way to Socialism ( my, မြန်မာ့နည်းမြန်မာ့ဟန် ဆိုရှယ်လစ်စနစ်), also known as the Burmese Road to Socialism, was the state ideology of the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma, the socialist state governed by the Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) from 1962 to 1988. The Burmese Way to Socialism was introduced by the Union Revolutionary Council (URC), the military junta established by Ne Win and his allies in the Tatmadaw (Burmese military) after they overthrew the democratically elected government of Prime Minister U Nu in a coup d'état on 2 March 1962.
