Muslim Community Radio
Muslim Community Radio (MCR) was a radio station based in London, United Kingdom founded in 1998. The station used to run through FM radio, at 87.7 FM (formerly 1143AM, 87.8 FM & 101.4 FM prior to that), and only broadcast annually during the holy month of Ramadan. The slogan of the radio station is 'Ramadan Special'. Description The station broadcasts from the London Muslim Centre, which is located next to the East London Mosque on Whitechapel Road in Tower Hamlets. It started to broadcast in 1998 through a RSL, then through Spectrum in the next years, and since 2001 acquired the rights to broadcast 24 hours across east London during the holy month of Ramadan. Its presenters are volunteers. The Islamic Forum Europe runs the radio station with assistance from the Young Muslim Organisation, the Junior Muslim Circle, the East London Mosque and the London Muslim Centre. London Muslim Centre
The East London Mosque (ELM) is situated in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets between Whitechapel and Aldgate East. Combined with the adjoining London Muslim Centre and Maryam Centre, it is one of the largest mosques in Europe accommodating more than 7,000 worshippers for congregational prayers. The mosque was one of the first in the UK to be allowed to use loudspeakers to broadcast the adhan. Building details Construction of the three-storey East London Mosque began in 1982 on land left empty after bombing during World War II, and was completed in 1985. The architect was John Gill Associates. The exterior is a distinctive brick pattern in two colours, with the front facing Whitechapel Road and the rear on Fieldgate Street. Young Muslim Organisation
Young Muslim Organisation (YMO) is an Islamic youth-oriented initiative based in England. It was established mainly by the British Bangladeshi youths in East London during the period of racial attacks in Tower Hamlets in 1978. The group first met in London in October 1978 to bring together what its website describes as "a dynamic band of youth who would respond to the challenges faced by their community with deep faith, true commitment and a positive and comprehensive work plan". Its dawah work includes ''School Link Project'' (SLP), ''College Link Project'' (CLP) and ''University Link Project'' (ULP) which organise activities such as lectures, seminars, awards ceremonies, camps, and sports activities. Spectrum
A spectrum (plural ''spectra'' or ''spectrums'') is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary, without gaps, across a continuum. The word was first used scientifically in optics to describe the rainbow of colors in visible light after passing through a prism. Whitechapel Road
Whitechapel Road is a major arterial road in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, in the East End of London. It is named after a small chapel of ease dedicated to St Mary and connects Whitechapel High Street to the west with Mile End Road to the east. The road is part of the historic Roman road from London to Colchester, now the A11. The road had become built up by the 19th century and is now a main shopping district in the Whitechapel area. Islamic radio is a category of radio formats that focus on transmitting programming with an Islamic message. Radio stations can be public, private and non-profit (or some form of Community radio). These radio stations typically focus on Islamic religious programming, such as reading of the Quran, talk radio-style programming (sometimes including live radio call-in shows), or long-form "preaching and teaching" programs with news programming with associated topics that can have an economic or a political angle to Muslim community.
