Throughout the years, the Cuban nation has developed a wealth of musicological material created by numerous investigators and experts on this subject. Fernando Ortiz Fernández
Fernando Ortiz Fernández (16 July 1881 – 10 April 1969) was a Cuban essayist, anthropologist, ethnomusicologist and scholar of Afro-Cuban culture. Ortiz was a prolific polymath dedicated to exploring, recording, and understanding all aspects of indigenous Cuban culture. Ortiz coined the term "transculturation," the notion of converging cultures. Life Ortiz was born in Havana. Disillusioned with politics in the early period of Cuban history and having been a member of President Gerardo Machado's Liberal Party, and a Liberal member of its House of Representatives from 1917 to 1922, he became active in the early nationalist civic revival movement. Throughout his life Ortiz was involved in the foundation of institutions and journals dedicated to the study of Cuban culture. He was the cofounder of the Cuban Academy of the Language in 1926. Guyún
Vincente González Rubiera (27 October 1908 – 29 September 1987), better known as Guyún, was an influential Cuban guitarist, harmonist and teacher, who tapped into classical guitar techniques to revive the accompaniment of the trova. He achieved the finest transcriptions for guitar. Born on 27 October 1908 in Santiago de Cuba, Guyún originally came to Havana to study medicine, but finding the university shut under Gerardo Machado, he started playing the guitar to earn a living. He started studying guitar under Sindo Garay, and later understudied Severino López, who had an excellent classical training in the Tárrega– Pujol tradition in Spain. Guyún developed a modern concept of harmony, and a way to apply classical technique to popular Cuban music. He became more adventurous, yet still in Cuban vein, and in 1938 stopped performing to devote himself to teaching the guitar. Alberto Alén Pérez
Alberto Alén Pérez (1948 in Havana – 14 October 2004) was a Cuban musicologist and cellist. Early life and education Alén studied violoncello with Professor Fabio Landa at Alejandro García Caturla Conservatory in Marianao, Havana, and at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in the same city. He also studied psychology at the Havana University and musicology in the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) where he graduated in 1982. Biography As a cellist, Alén worked in several orchestras such as the Orquesta Popular de Conciertos founded by Alfredo Diez Nieto and the Orchestra of the Grand Theater of Havana. He also performed in other orchestras affiliated to the Cuban Radio and Television Network. Rolando Antonio Pérez Fernández
Rolando Antonio Pérez Fernández (born 1947, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba) is a Cuban musicologist, cellist and professor. Academic background Rolando Pérez initiated his musical studies in Santiago de Cuba, where he also began his career as cellist under the guidance of distinguished performer and professor Ernesto Xancó. In 1976 he graduated from Music Medium Level in the specialty of violoncello at Havana Municipal Conservatory "Amadeo Roldán". The University of Arts of Cuba / Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) was established on September 1, 1976, by the Cuban government as a school for the arts. Its original structure had three schools: Music, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts. History The ISA has four schools, the previous three and one for Arts and Audiovisual Communication Media. Lydia Cabrera
Lydia Cabrera (May 20, 1899, in Havana, Cuba – September 19, 1991, in Miami, Florida) was a Cuban independent ethnographer. Cabrera was a Cuban writer and literary activist. She was an authority on Santería and other Afro-Cuban religions. During her lifetime she published over one hundred books; little of her work is available in English. Her most important book is ''El Monte'' (Spanish: "The Wilderness"), which was the first major ethnographic study of Afro-Cuban traditions, herbalism and religion. José Ardévol
José Ardévol (13 March 1911, in Barcelona – 7 January 1981, in Havana) was a Cuban composer and conductor of Spanish derivation. As a child, Ardévol studied under his father, Fernando, who was a musician and conductor. He emigrated to Cuba in 1930, and from 1934 to 1952 was the director of the Orquestra de cámara de la Habana. He was a professor in Cuba from 1936 to 1951, teaching in universities in Havana and Oriente. In 1942 he founded a movement called ''Grupo de renovación musical'', which included several of his students devoted to his aesthetic ideals. He conducted the orchestra of the government's Ministry of Education beginning in 1959. Argeliers León Pérez (7 May 1918 – 23 February 1991) was a Cuban composer and musicologist. Academic Background He studied music at the Municipal Conservatory of Havana, Pedagogy at the University of Havana and completed specialized studies during summer courses at the University of Havana and the Universidad de Concepción in Chile. Alejo Carpentier
Alejo Carpentier y Valmont (, ; December 26, 1904 – April 24, 1980) was a Cuban novelist, essayist, and musicologist who greatly influenced Latin American literature during its famous "boom" period. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, of French and Russian parentage, Carpentier grew up in Havana, Cuba, and despite his European birthplace, he strongly identified as Cuban throughout his life.
