Musical Futures
Musical Futures is a not-for-profit music education program, pedagogy and resource platform built for teachers, children and youths. It was started in the United Kingdom in 2003 by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and is now an internationally recognised enterprise. Background The Musical Futures journey began in 2003 when the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, an independent grant-making foundation, instigated an initiative to find new and imaginative ways of engaging all young people, aged 11–18, in meaningful music activities. The starting point for Musical Futures was to understand the factors affecting the apparent disengagement of young people with sustained musicmaking activities, at a time in their lives when music is not only a passion for many young people, but plays a big part in shaping their social identity. Music Education
Music education is a field of practice in which educators are trained for careers as elementary or secondary music teachers, school or music conservatory ensemble directors. Music education is also a research area in which scholars do original research on ways of teaching and learning music. Music education scholars publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals, and teach undergraduate and graduate education students at university education or music schools, who are training to become music teachers. Paul Hamlyn
Paul Hamlyn, Baron Hamlyn, (12 February 1926 – 31 August 2001) was a German-born British publisher and philanthropist, who established the Paul Hamlyn Foundation in 1987. Early life He was born Paul Bertrand Wolfgang Hamburger in Berlin, Germany, in 1926. His parents were Richard Hamburger, a paediatrician at the Charité Hospital in Berlin, and his wife, Lili, a Quaker of Polish descent. When the National Socialists came to power and his father was forced out of his profession, the Hamburger family, who were Jewish, moved to London. Upon their arrival, the family lived in St. John's Wood and Paul was educated at St. Christopher's, a Quaker school in Letchworth, Hertfordshire. His father died in 1940 when Paul was 14. Shortly afterwards he changed his surname to Hamlyn, which he picked out of the telephone directory. Paul Hamlyn Foundation
Paul Hamlyn Foundation is a registered charity, and a company limited by guarantee which has been established in its current form since 2004, succeeding an earlier incarnation that was founded in 1987, which itself formalised established philanthropic giving by Paul Hamlyn that had been ongoing since 1972. It is an independent grant-making foundation, making grants to individuals and organisations in the UK to help people overcome disadvantage. The foundation focuses on supporting children and young adults, especially in pursuit of the arts. The Foundation is located in Kings Cross, London, with around 40 staff members. BandLab Technologies is a Singaporean company that operates a social music platform, called BandLab, and also owns a variety of music-related brands. Founded in 2015, these include Harmony and Heritage Guitars; ''Guitar.com'', '' NME'', ''Uncut'' and ''MusicTech.com'' media platforms; and Swee Lee musical instrument retailer and distributor. Serato
Serato (stylized in all lowercase; ) is a music software company. History Serato was founded in Auckland, New Zealand by Steve West and AJ Berstenshaw, who created software that changes the tempo of a recorded track without changing the pitch. Software Serato produces software used in digital music mixing, including digital vinyl record mixing for DVS records. Serato also produces software for DJ mixing, which has visual components including wave form beatmatching and other information about the sound being produced by the system. The software works with mainstream hardware, such as Roland, Denon, and Pioneer. In 2018 Serato changed the names of its DJ software from Serato DJ to Serato DJ Pro, and from Serato DJ Intro to Serato DJ Lite. The new versions use 64-bit software architecture. IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society (IOE) is the education school of University College London (UCL). It specialises in postgraduate study and research in the field of education and is one of UCL's 11 constituent faculties. Prior to merging with UCL in 2014, it was a constituent college of the University of London.
