Murdoch Mackay
Murdoch Mackay (April 30, 1884 – 1963) was a Manitoba politician. He led the Manitoba Liberal Party from 1931 to 1932, and brought the party into an alliance with John Bracken's Progressives. Mackay was born on Boularderie Island, Nova Scotia, the son of John Mackay and Anna MacAulay. He subsequently moved to Manitoba, and was elected to the provincial legislature in the general election of 1927. A Liberal, Mackay defeated Progressive incumbent Clifford Barclay by 18 votes in the riding of Springfield. The provincial Liberals fared poorly in this election, winning only seven seats in a 55-member legislature. Party leader Hugh Robson stepped down in 1930. After a brief period in which James Breakey led the parliamentary caucus, Mackay was chosen over Fred C. Hamilton as party leader in 1931. William Lyon Mackenzie King
William Lyon Mackenzie King (December 17, 1874 – July 22, 1950) was a Canadian statesman and politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Canada for three non-consecutive terms from 1921 to 1926, 1926 to 1930, and 1935 to 1948. A Liberal, he was the dominant politician in Canada from the early 1920s to the late 1940s. King is best known for his leadership of Canada throughout the Great Depression and the Second World War. He played a major role in laying the foundations of the Canadian welfare state and established Canada's international reputation as a middle power fully committed to world order. With a total of 21 years and 154 days in office, he remains the longest-serving prime minister in Canadian history. Winnipeg () is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. Murdoch MacKay Collegiate is a public, co-ed high school in the River East Transcona School Division, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. History The school was named after Murdoch Mackay, a prominent physician, leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party, member of the provincial legislature and long-time Transcona resident. MacKay taught school in his hometown of Melville, Nova Scotia, before coming west and graduating from Manitoba Medical School in 1916. When the building opened in September 1963, one year after his death, his wife, Ruby, attended the official dedication ceremony and laying of the cornerstone. The red brick structure opened with 22 rooms, but has undergone numerous expansions since, which have included the addition of Power Mechanics, Aerospace, and Fashion Technology vocational areas. Transcona is a ward and suburb of Winnipeg, Manitoba, located about east of the downtown area. Until 1972, it was a separate municipality, having been incorporated first as the Town of Transcona on 6 April 1912 and then as the City of Transcona in 1961. George Olive
George Edward Olive (born 1887 in Leeds, England; died April 20, 1973) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1945 to 1953, as a member of the social-democratic Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). Olive came to Canada in 1910. He settled in Transcona, then an independent working-class community adjoining but independent of Winnipeg, in 1914. He was a member of the United Association of Steamfitters and Plumbers, working for the Canadian National Railway. He served as a member of the local school board, and was elected Mayor of Transcona in 1936, a position he continued to hold after being elected to the provincial legislature. He married Amy Thackray (1888–1955), and they had two sons, Bill and Joe, both of whom served overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II.
