Murarrie (formerly Mooraree) is an eastern riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Murarrie had a population of 4,303 people. Queensport is a neighbourhood within Murarrie (). Gibson Island is a neighbourhood within Murarrie () and, despite its name, is no longer an island. Geography Murarrie is located in the eastern suburbs on the southern bank of the Brisbane River. It is bounded to the north by the median of the Brisbane River, to the east and south by the river's tributary Bulimba Creek (historically known as Doughboy Creek or Doboy Creek) which has its mouth at . It is then bounded to the south-west and west by Wynnum Road, Creek Road, the Cleveland railway line, Barrack Road, Lytton Road, Colmslie Road (formerly Chemical Works Road) and then north to the river. Hemmant is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hemmant had a population of 2,385 people. Geography Hemmant is by road east of the Brisbane CBD. Hemmant is bounded by the Brisbane River to the north and Bulimba Creek to the west. The Fishermans Islands freight railway line and the Cleveland railway line run parallel through the suburb from west (Murarrie) to east ( Wynnum West). Murarrie railway station is located on the Cleveland line in Queensland, Australia. It serves the Brisbane suburb of Murarrie. It opened in 1888 as Mooraree and the name of both the station and the locality were changed to Murarrie in 1907. Cannon Hill is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Cannon Hill had a population of 5,533 people. Geography The suburb is located by road east of the Brisbane GPO. History Cannon Hill was originally inhabited by Aboriginal people but, after being accused of "intimidating" the settlers, they were "dispersed" by the Native Police and Brisbane Mounted Police in November 1861, around the time when British settlement began in the area. Some land was used by settlers for farming and grazing, but the area remained mostly bushland. The suburb is most likely named after Cannon Hill House, a residence formerly located on Wynnum Road. It was occupied by the Weedon family from its construction in 1867 until burning down in 1927. Thornhill Weedon named the house after two fallen trees which were said to have resembled a cannon. Bulimba Creek
Bulimba Creek, originally known as Doboy Creek or Doughboy Creek, is a perennial stream that is a tributary of the Brisbane River, located in suburban Brisbane in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. Course and features The Bulimba Creek catchment has it sources in the low plateaus and marshy parts of the suburbs of and Runcorn (west catchment) and Kuraby (east catchment) in the south of Brisbane. It then flows in a northerly direction through the suburbs of Mansfield, Mackenzie, Carindale, Murarrie and Lytton, before meeting the Brisbane River via the Aquarium Passage along the Lytton Reach. The creek has six tributaries: Mimosa Creek, Spring Creek, Salvin Creek, Phillips Creek, Tingalpa Creek and Lindum Creek. Gateway Motorway
The Gateway Motorway (M2 to Eight Mile Plains and M1 to Pine River) is a major tolled motorway in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia which includes the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges (former Gateway Bridge). The motorway is operated by toll road operator Transurban. It bypasses Brisbane in order to provide easier access between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. It runs from the M2 Logan Motorway in Drewvale (near Browns Plains) to the Gympie Arterial Road in Bald Hills. Cleveland Railway Line
The Cleveland railway line is a suburban railway line extending east-southeast from Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia. It is part of the Queensland Rail City network. History Following the opening of the Wooloongabba Branch railway line from Corinda to Stanley Street in South Brisbane in 1884, calls were made for extending the line to Cleveland to serve the developing farming area. A line was surveyed, and took an indirect route to avoid hilly country and to serve Fort Lytton, a gun emplacement at the south entrance to the Brisbane River, then the major defence installation for the city. Geography It is located east of the CBD, and borders Cannon Hill, Norman Park, Seven Hills, Balmoral, and Hawthorne. Bulimba is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate covers the inner eastern suburbs of Brisbane. Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges
The Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges are a side-by-side pair of road bridges on the Gateway Motorway (M1), which skirts the eastern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The western bridge carries traffic to the north and the eastern bridge carries traffic to the south. They are the most eastern crossing of the Brisbane River and the closest to Moreton Bay, crossing at the Quarries Reach and linking the suburbs of Eagle Farm and Murarrie. The original western bridge (formerly named the Gateway Bridge) was opened on 11 January 1986 and cost A$92 million to build. The duplicate bridge was opened in May 2010, and cost $350 million.
