Municipalities Of Uruguay
The Uruguayan departments are subdivided into municipalities and, as of 2022, there are 125 municipalities. This second level administrative division system was created by Law No. 18567 of 13 September 2009 and the first municipalities were created (or converted from Local Boards in the previous system) in March 2010. In the municipal elections of 2010 municipal authorities were elected for the first time and they assumed office months later. Each municipality is governed by a local council, made up of 5 members. Soriano Department
Soriano () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Mercedes. It is located on the west of the country, south of Río Negro Department, north of Colonia Department and west of Flores Department. Its western border is the Río Uruguay, separating it from Argentina. History In 1624, a Franciscan Mission established a reduction for the indigenous tribes of the area named Santo Domingo Soriano. In spite of interruptions in its existence, it is considered the earliest populated centre of the actual Uruguay. Eventually, in its place Villa Soriano was founded. Cardona is a city in the Soriano Department, in southwestern Uruguay. The main square of the city is Plaza Artigas, featuring a monument to General Artigas. Geography The city is located on the border with Colonia Department and it forms a unified population centre together with Florencio Sánchez, Uruguay, Florencio Sánchez, which is across the border and belongs to Colonia Department.
