Brigadier Mohammad Usman MVC (15 July 1912 – 3 July 1948) was the highest ranking officer of the Indian Army killed in action during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. As a Muslim, Usman became a symbol of India's inclusive secularism. At the time of the partition of India he with many other Muslim officers declined to move to the Pakistan Army and continued to serve with the Indian Army. Khan Bahadur Sir Mohammad Usman (1884 – 1 February 1960) was an Indian politician, hakim and socialite who served as the Minister of Home for the Madras Presidency in the Justice Party government of the Raja of Bobbili and as the first Indian acting Governor of Madras from 16May 1934 to 16August 1934. His name is often written Muhammad Usman. Usman was born into an aristocratic family of Tanjore in the Madras Presidency in 1884. He graduated from Madras Christian College and joined the Justice Party. He was elected to the Madras Legislative Council and later, to the Governor's executive council. Usman served as the member of posts and air in the Viceroy's Executive Council between 1942 and 1947. He died in 1960 at the age of 76. He was a part-time hakim or doctor in Unani medicine and used his influential position in the provincial administration to promote indigenous systems of medicine. Mohammad Usman Rana (born 3 June 1985) is a Norwegian commentator, columnist and medical doctor, having earned his degree at the University of Oslo. Early life He was born in Norway, and grew up in Husvik in southern Tønsberg. His father Aftab Ahmed Rana was a local politician for the Norwegian Labour Party, and a leader of an Islamic congregation (named "Islamsk Senter") in Vestfold. Career Rana enrolled at the University of Oslo to attend medical school. In 2005 he became the leader of the Norwegian-Pakistani Students' Association (''Norsk-pakistansk studentersamfunn''). In 2007, Rana became the leader of the Muslim Students' Association at the University of Oslo. He is a columnist for ''Aftenposten'' – the largest newspaper in Norway – and is a commentator on Islam, extremism, and secularism. Yusuf Mohammed Usman Edu (born 2 March 1994) is a Nigerian footballer who plays for Israeli club Maccabi Bnei Reineh.
