Mthethomusha Game Reserve
Mthethomusha Game Reserve is an protected area in Mpumalanga, South Africa, that borders Kruger National Park. Operated by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, Mthethomusha is home to the Mpakeni tribe that formerly owned the area before leasing it to the Agency in 1985. The protected area includes the villages of Luphisi (with a population of 6,000) and Mpakeni (4,500). Mthethomusha Game Reserve was known for its luxury lodge—Bongani Mountain Lodge. Mpumalanga () is a province of South Africa. The name means "East", or literally "The Place Where the Sun Rises" in the Swazi, Xhosa, Ndebele and Zulu languages. Mpumalanga lies in eastern South Africa, bordering Eswatini and Mozambique. It constitutes 6.5% of South Africa's land area. Kruger National Park is a South African National Park and one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends from north to south and from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Poaching has been defined as the illegal hunting or capturing of wild animals, usually associated with land use rights. Poaching was once performed by impoverished peasants for subsistence purposes and to supplement meager diets. It was set against the hunting privileges of nobility and territorial rulers. Since the 1980s, the term "poaching" has also been used to refer to the illegal harvesting of wild plant species. In agricultural terms, the term 'poaching' is also applied to the loss of soils or grass by the damaging action of feet of livestock, which can affect availability of productive land, water pollution through increased runoff and welfare issues for cattle.
