The Mpi are an ethnic group of Thailand. Geographic Distribution There are about 1,500 Mpi in the Nan and Phrae Provinces of Thailand. Origin The Mpi migrated to Thailand. They are of Lolo descent. Laos

Theravada Buddhism

Mpi Language
Mpi is a Loloish language of Thailand. The number of speakers is in decline. It is spoken in the following two villages in northern Thailand. *Ban Dong, Tambon Suan Khuean สวนเขื่อน, Mueang Phrae District, Phrae Province (autonym: ' in Ban Dong) *Ban Sakoeng, Tambon Yot ยอด, Song Khwae District, Nan Province (autonym: ' Ban Sakoeng) Since the Mpi of Thailand migrated from Mengla, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China over 300 years ago, there could also possibly be Mpi speakers in China (Nahhas 2007). Lao Language
Lao, sometimes referred to as Laotian (, 'Lao' or , 'Lao language'), is a Kra–Dai language of the Lao people. It is spoken in Laos, where it is the official language for around 7 million people, as well as in northeast Thailand, where it is used by around 23 million people, usually referred to as Isan. Lao serves as a lingua franca among the citizens of Laos, who also speak approximately 90 other languages, many of which are unrelated to Lao. It is a tonal and analytic language, similar to other Kra-Dai languages as well as to Chinese and Vietnamese.
