Mountjoy Farm
Mount Joy (sometimes called Santa Fe) is a historic slave plantation in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland, which has a current address of 5000 Executive Park Drive. The farm is located on the original land grant named Chews Resolution Manor. In 1810, Dr. Arthur Pue owned land around modern Route 100. Pue was the family doctor for the Gorman family, who senator Arthur Pue Gorman is named after. The Pue family farmed the property with 19 slaves. In 1851, Samuel Wethered Jr. Purchased 206 acres of farmland, creating "Santa Fe" from Dr. Pue. In 1912, 193 acres of the property was purchased by the Buck Family. On October 10, 1980 the estate was purchased by K&M Development Corporation (Brantly Development Group Corporation) for $532,000. In 2003, Winchester Homes purchased the site. Chews Resolution Manor, also known as Avoca, Resolution Manor, is a historic home and slave plantation located south of Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland. Arthur Pue Gorman
Arthur Pue Gorman (March 11, 1839June 4, 1906) was an American politician. He was leader of the Gorman-Rasin organization with Isaac Freeman Rasin that controlled the Maryland Democratic Party from the late 1870s until his death in 1906. Gorman served as United States Senate, United States Senator from Maryland from 1881 to 1899 and again from 1903 until his death. He was a prominent leader of the Bourbon Democrat faction of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party. Gorman was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee during Grover Cleveland's 1884 Presidential campaign and he is widely credited with securing Cleveland's victory. Howard County Conservancy
The Howard County Conservancy is a non-profit land trust that operates a nature center in Woodstock, Maryland. It is located at the 300-year-old, Mt. Pleasant Farm. History The center was founded in 1990 as a private land trust with the goal of protecting and preserving farmland and historic sites in Howard County. Wheatfield (Ellicott City, Maryland)
Wheatfield, also known by Wheatfields, Resolution Manor, or Wheatfield Farm is a historic home located south of Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland. Wheatfield started on land patented to Samuel Chew in 1695 as Chews Resolution Manor and Chews Vineyard. Caleb Dorsey inherited the land in 1718. In 1850 the 202-acre farm was purchased for $9,000 by James Clark. One son, James Clark Jr. left the farm to join the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, surviving prison camp to return as a cattle broker. His other son John Lawrence Clark (1855-) was born at Wheatfield. He maintained the farm raising a family that would be closely associated with Howard County business and politics. The Wheatfield manor house is built in progressively smaller sections in the "Telescope style" starting in 1802. A water table runs along the foundation of the property.
