Mount Rose Wilderness
The Mt. Rose Wilderness is a protected wilderness area in the Carson Range of Washoe County, Nevada, Washoe County, in the northwesternU.S. state of Nevada. Washoe County, Nevada
Washoe County () is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 486,492, making it Nevada's second-most populous county. Its county seat is Reno. Washoe County is included in the Reno, NV Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Washoe County was created on November 25, 1861, as one of the original nine counties of the Nevada Territory. It is named after the Washoe people who originally inhabited the area. It was consolidated with Roop County in 1864. Washoe City was the first county seat in 1861 and was replaced by Reno in 1871. In 1911, a small band of Shoshone and Bannock led by Mike Daggett killed four stockmen in Washoe County. A posse was formed, and on February 26, 1911, at the Battle of Kelley Creek, eight of Daggett's band were killed, along with one member of the posse, Ed Hogle. Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest
The Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest (HTNF) is the principal U.S. National Forest in the U.S. state of Nevada, and has a smaller portion in Eastern California. With an area of , it is the largest U.S. National Forest outside of Alaska. History The lands now part of Humboldt-Toiyabe have been administratively reorganized many times, and include parts of several defunct national forests. The oldest of these is Ruby Mountains National Forest, established on May 3, 1906. In 1908, it was combined with Independence National Forest to form Humboldt National Forest. Toiyabe National Forest was established March 2, 1907. It ceased to exist in 1932, when it was absorbed by Nevada National Forest, but was reestablished in 1938 from parts of Humboldt and Nevada. Relay Peak
Relay Peak is a 10,338-foot-elevation mountain summit located in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. Description Relay Peak is set five miles north of Lake Tahoe in the Mount Rose Wilderness, on land managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It is part of the Carson Range which is a subset of the Sierra Nevada. It is situated southwest of Mount Rose and north of Incline Village. Topographic relief is modest as the summit rises above Ginny Lake in one mile, and above Incline Lake in two miles. The Tahoe Rim Trail traverses the summit of the peak, providing an approach option, and the summit represents the highest point anywhere along the entire 170 mile trail. Mount Houghton is a 10,490-foot-elevation mountain summit located in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. Description Mount Houghton is set seven miles north of Lake Tahoe in the Mount Rose Wilderness, on land managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It is the highest point of Relay Ridge, second-highest peak within the wilderness, and ranks as the seventh-highest peak of the Carson Range, which is a subset of the Sierra Nevada. Mount Rose Weather Observatory
The Mount Rose Weather Observatory was established on June 29, 1905, on the summit, making it one of the oldest high altitude weather observatories in the United States. Dr. James Edward Church established the observatory and established a snow survey system to measure the amount of water contained in the snow pack. The observatory featured many design features that were unique or revolutionary for its time. This included the ability to record data without anyone at the site. The building was built to be able to shed accumulated snow from the roof without manual assistance. The observatory was a department of the University of Nevada. Mount Rose (Nevada)
Mount Rose is the highest mountain in Washoe County, within the Carson Range of Nevada, United States. It ranks thirty-seventh among the most topographically prominent peaks in the state. It is also both the highest and most topographically prominent peak of the greater Sierra Nevada range within the state of Nevada, and the third most topographically prominent peak in the Sierra Nevada overall.
