Washington Township is a township in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,401 at the 2020 census, down from 4,432 at the 2010 census. The township surrounds the borough of Edinboro. Geography Washington Township is in south-central Erie County, bordered to the south by Crawford County. Interstate 79 passes through the western part of the township, with access from Exit 166 (U.S. Route 6N). Ski country is the hilly, snowy portions of the boundary between the Niagara Frontier and the Southern Tier of the western part of New York. Weather The area is a largely hilly terrain, mostly downwind from Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes, along the Eastern Continental Divide between the Great Lakes, the Mississippi River and Susquehanna River watersheds. The Snowbelt is the region near the Great Lakes in North America where heavy snowfall in the form of lake-effect snow is particularly common. Snowbelts are typically found downwind of the lakes, principally off the eastern and southern shores.
