Mount Hope, New Jersey
Mount Hope is an Local government in New Jersey#Unincorporated communities, unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) that is a part of Rockaway Township, New Jersey, Rockaway Township, in Morris County, New Jersey, Morris County in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It was formerly an unincorporated iron mining village associated with the American Revolutionary War. Mining operations were said to have begun around 1710 and operated continuously through the 1970s. John Jacob Faesch was the first to develop Mount Hope into an iron plantation with the erection of a stone furnace in 1772 and operated the facility until his death in 1799. Various owners and lessees ran the furnace until 1831 when The Mount Hope Mining Company was incorporated in response to the opening of the Morris Canal and its transportation opportunities. Rockaway Township, New Jersey
Rockaway Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township's population was 25,341, reflecting an increase of 1,185 (+4.9%) from the 24,156 counted in the 2010 Census. Rockaway Township was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 8, 1844, from portions of Hanover Township and Pequannock Township. Mount Hope Miners' Church
The Mount Hope Miners' Church, also known as the Mount Hope Methodist Episcopal Church, is located on Mount Hope Road in the Mount Hope section of Rockaway Township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The historic wood frame church was built in 1868 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 20, 2012, for its significance in architecture, social history, and religion. Mesabi Range
The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. First described in 1866, it is the chief iron ore mining district in the United States. The district is located largely in Itasca and Saint Louis counties. It has been extensively worked since 1892, and has seen a transition from high-grade direct shipping ores through gravity concentrates to the current industry exclusively producing iron ore ( taconite) pellets. Morris Canal
The Morris Canal (1829–1924) was a common carrier anthracite coal canal across northern New Jersey that connected the two industrial canals at Easton, Pennsylvania across the Delaware River from its western terminus at Phillipsburg, New Jersey to New York Harbor and New York City via its eastern terminals in Newark and on the Hudson River in Jersey City. The canal was sometimes called the Morris and Essex Canal, in error, due to confusion with the nearby and unrelated Morris and Essex Railroad. John Jacob Faesch
John Jacob Faesch (1729 – 1799) was a Swiss people, Swiss ironmaster who established the Mount Hope Iron Furnace in the Mount Hope village section of Rockaway Township, New Jersey in 1772 which played an important role in providing munitions and tools during the American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War. Faesch established himself as an early Patriot (American Revolution), patriot to the American cause. He was appointed as a Morris County judge, justice of the peace and later one of three Morris County delegates to the New Jersey State Convention that ratified the United States Constitution in 1787. Faesch was born Johann Jakob Faesch in 1729 in Basel, Switzerland and had emigrated to the United States in 1764. In his later years he relocated to Boonton, New Jersey and died at Morristown, New Jersey, Morristown, New Jersey on 29 May 1799.
