Mount Dawson (Antarctica)
Mount Dawson () is a sharp, pyramidal mountain located 4 km (2.5 mi) northwest of Mount Reimer in the north part of the Sentinel Range, Antarctica. It surmounts Vidul Glacier to the east. The mountain was discovered by the Charles R. Bentley-led Marie Byrd Land Traverse Party, 1957–58, and named after Major Merle R. Dawson (d.1986), USA, leader of the Army-Navy Trail Party which established an oversnow route from Little America V to the site of Byrd Station in November–December 1956; Project Manager for Ship Operations in the Office of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation (NSF), 1965–70. Mount Reimer
Mount Reimer () is a mountain, 2,430 m, in the northern portion of the Sentinel Range, standing on the south side of Newcomer Glacier 5 mi southwest of Mount Warren. It surmounts Skaklya Glacier to the southeast and Vidul Glacier to the north-northwest. The mountain was named by US-ACAN for John D. Reimer of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6, aerial photographer on flights over this range on Dec. 14–15, 1959. Sentinel Range
The Sentinel Range is a major mountain range situated northward of Minnesota Glacier and forming the northern half of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. The range trends NNW-SSE for about and is 24 to 48 km (15 to 30 mi) wide. Vidul Glacier
Vidul Glacier ( bg, ледник Видул, lednik Vidul, ) is the 7.5 km long and 1.4 km wide glacier on the east side of the main crest of northern Sentinel Range in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. It is situated northwest of Skaklya Glacier and southwest of the middle course of Newcomer Glacier. The glacier drains the north slopes of Mount Reimer and the east slopes of Mount Dawson, flows northwards and joins Newcomer Glacier west of Mount Warren in Gromshin Heights. Little America V
Little America was a series of Antarctic exploration bases from 1929 to 1958, located on the Ross Ice Shelf, south of the Bay of Whales. The coordinates are approximate. Little America I The first base in the series was established in January 1929 by Richard Byrd, and was abandoned in 1930. This was where the film ''With Byrd at the South Pole'' (1930), about Byrd's trip to the South Pole, was filmed. Little America II Little America II was established in 1934, some above the site of the original base, with some of the original base accessed via tunnel. This base was briefly set adrift in 1934, but the iceberg fused to the main glacier. During the 1934–1935 expedition, many souvenir letters were sent from Little America, using a commemorative postage stamp issued by the U.S. government. Byrd Station
The Byrd Station is a former research station established by the United States during the International Geophysical Year by U.S. Navy Seabees during Operation Deep Freeze II in West Antarctica. History A joint Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines operation supported an overland tractor train traverse that left out of Little America V in late 1956 to establish the station. The train was led by Army Major Merle Dawson and completed a traverse of over unexplored country in Marie Byrd Land to blaze a trail to a spot selected beforehand. The station consisted of a set of four prefabricated buildings and was erected in less than one month by U.S. Navy Seabees. It was commissioned on January 1, 1957. The original station ("Old Byrd") lasted about four years before it began to collapse under the snow.
