Mount Besch
Mount Besch () is a mountain (1,210 m) forming the south end of Barnes Ridge on the east side of Sentinel Range, Ellsworth Mountains. It is overlooking the terminus of Ellen Glacier to the south, Arapya Glacier to the west, and Ranuli Ice Piedmont to the northeast. The mountain was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1957–59. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Captain Marvin E. Besch of the United States Air Force (USAF), who participated in establishing the IGY South Pole Station in the 1956–57 season. Barnes Ridge (Antarctica)
Barnes Ridge () is a ridge long, rising to over (Mount Besch) and extending between Young Glacier and Ellen Glacier at the east side of the Sentinel Range, Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. It is bounded by Rutford Ice Stream to the east and Arapya Glacier to the west, and connected to Maglenik Heights to the northwest by Dropla Gap. Sentinel Range
The Sentinel Range is a major mountain range situated northward of Minnesota Glacier and forming the northern half of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. The range trends NNW-SSE for about and is 24 to 48 km (15 to 30 mi) wide. Ellsworth Mountains
The Ellsworth Mountains are the highest mountain ranges in Antarctica, forming a long and wide chain of mountains in a north to south configuration on the western margin of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Marie Byrd Land. They are bisected by Minnesota Glacier to form the Sentinel Range to the north and the Heritage Range to the south. Ellen Glacier
The Ellen Glacier is a glacier in the central Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica. It drains the eastern slopes of Mount Anderson and Long Gables and flows generally southeast for to Barnes Ridge, where it leaves the range and enters the south flowing Rutford Ice Stream. It was first mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1957–59, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Colonel Cicero J. Arapya Glacier ( bg, ледник Арапя, lednik Arapya, ) is the long and wide glacier on the east side of north-central Sentinel Range in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica, situated south of Young Glacier. It flows southwards along the west side of Barnes Ridge and east of Chapman Peak and joins Ellen Glacier southwest of Mount Besch. Ranuli Ice Piedmont
Ranuli Ice Piedmont ( bg, ледник Ранули, lednik Ranuli, ) is the glacier extending in south-southeast to north-northwest direction and in west-southwest to east-northeast direction on the east side of Sentinel Range in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. It is draining the east slopes of Barnes Ridge to flow into Rutford Ice Stream to the east-northeast, Young Glacier to the north, and Ellen Glacier to the south. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980.
