Mounir Ben Slimane
Mounir Ben Slimane () is a Tunisian professional basketball coach. He was the head coach of the United Arab Emirates national basketball team, whom he coached the UAE at the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship in China. He also is the current technical director of the United Arab Emirates Basketball Association. Ben Slimane started his coaching career in 1986. On April 12, 2021, he signed with US Monastir in Tunisia. He guided the team to a second place in the Basketball Africa League. Monastir lost to Zamalek in the 2021 BAL Finals. Ben Slimane was also an assistant for the Detroit Pistons in the 2022 NBA Summer League. 2021 BAL Season
The 2021 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 1, was the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Established as a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and FIBA, the BAL is the highest tier continental league of Africa, replacing the FIBA Africa Basketball League. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, COVID-19 pandemic, the BAL held its inaugural season one year later as planned, with the season beginning in 2021. Initially the league planned to play in six venues in six countries; however, due to the pandemic the season was held in a bio-secure bubble in Kigali, Rwanda. 2021 BAL Group Phase
The 2021 BAL group phase began on 16 May 2021 and ended on 24 May 2021. A total of 12 teams competed in the group stage to decide the 8 places in the 2021 BAL Playoffs. Initially, it was planned that in the regular season, twelve teams play in two Conferences with six teams each. Each team will play five games, one against each opponent, inside its conference. The top three teams from each conference advance to the Super 6. The games will be played in six arenas divided over the African continent. The regular season will start in March 2020. The format was changed to a group phase as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2020–21 US Monastir Basketball Season
The 2020–21 season was the 62nd season of the US Monastir men's basketball team and the 1st of the team in the Basketball Africa League (BAL). On 27 April 2021, Monastir won its sixth Championnat National A championship, its third consecutive title in a row. In its debut season in the Basketball Africa League, the team dominated its way through the regular season, defeating all three opponents by a wide margin. After blowouts in the quarter- and semifinals, Monastir lost to Zamalek in the 2021 BAL Finals. 2021 BAL Finals
The 2021 BAL Finals was the championship game of the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The final was played in the Kigali Arena in Kigali on 30 May 2021. The game was played between Egyptian club Zamalek and Tunisian club US Monastir. Due to COVID-19 pandemic regulations, attendance in the arena was limited and 1,789 people were present. Zamalek defeated Tunisian side Monastir 76–63 to win its first BAL championship and second African championship, having won the 1992 continental title. As such, the team qualified for the 2021 FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Zamalek's Walter Hodge was named league MVP after the final. The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition, similar to the format of the UEFA Champions League.
