Mottistone is a village on the Isle of Wight, located in the popular tourist area the Back of the Wight.http://www.backofthewight.net It is located 8 Miles southwest of Newport in the southwest of the island, and is home to the National Trust's Mottistone Manor. History The Island's only megalithic monument, the Longstone is situated nearby. The name Mottistone (the Speaker's or pleader's stone) almost certainly derives from the Longstone, which was used as a meeting place (or "moot-stone") in Anglo-Saxon times. Geography Mottistone Down is a Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Mottistone, and covering ; it adjoins the Brighstone Down, the central part of the ridge. Chalk
Chalk is a soft, white, porous, sedimentary carbonate rock. It is a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite and originally formed deep under the sea by the compression of microscopic plankton that had settled to the sea floor. Chalk is common throughout Western Europe, where deposits underlie parts of France, and steep cliffs are often seen where they meet the sea in places such as the Dover cliffs on the Kent coast of the English Channel. Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival
Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival is a local event occurring in various venues around Brighstone and Mottistone on the Isle of Wight in England for the winter tourist season. This charitable event raises money for local and national charities. History The Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival began in 1996 and has since been able to raise nearly £100,000 for Island and national charities. The festivities traditionally start on a Wednesday with a tree lighting ceremony in Brighstone Church in aid of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. This event has attracted around 6,500 tourists each year. St Peter And St Paul's Church, Mottistone
St Peter and St Paul's Church is a parish church in the Church of England in the village of Mottistone, Isle of Wight. It is a Grade I listed building. History The church is medieval, dating from the 12th century, by Brian de Insula, lord of Mottistone Manor. Much of the current building is from the 15th. The Cheke chapel was added in the 16th century, by the Cheke family who became lords of the manor in 1300. The chancel was reroofed in 1862, with timber from the Bermudan barque Cedrene which was wrecked nearby. The Cedrene was just 16 days old when it wrecked on the shores of the Back of the Wight. A Victorian restoration was carried out in 1863, which included the reconstruction of window tracery, nave arches and piers, roofs and walls.
