Mother Tongue Society ( et, Emakeele Selts) is an Estonian organization that focuses on topics related to the Estonian language. The organization was established on 23 March 1920 at Tartu University. Nowadays, the organization is located in Tallinn. The organization is an associated organization of Estonian Academy of Sciences. Huno Rätsep
Huno Rätsep (born 28 December 1927 in Tartu) is an Estonian linguist. In 1951 he graduated from Tartu State University. Since 1953 he has taught at the University of Tartu, since 1977, a professor. His main fields of research have been structural linguistics and generative grammar, grammar of Estonian language. Since 1981 he is a member of Estonian Academy of Sciences. 1982-1982 he was the chairperson of Mother Tongue Society. Helle Metslang
Helle Metslang (born 29 July 1950 in Paide) is an Estonian linguist. Biography Metslang studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu, graduating in 1974. She subsequently worked at the Institute of the Estonian Language in Tallinn. In 1978 she defended her candidate thesis on syntactic aspects of Estonian folk poetry. She received her doctoral degree at the University of Oulu in 1994 for a comparative study of Estonian and Finnish. In 2000, Metslang became Professor of Estonian at Tallinn University, and she held the Chair of Contemporary Estonian at the University of Tartu from 2007 until her retirement in 2020. Mati Erelt
Mati Erelt (born 12 March 1941) is an Estonian linguist. Mati Erelt was born in Tallinn. In 1965 he graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in Estonian language and literature. He defended his doctoral dissertation there in 1981. From 1989 until 1991 he was a professor at Tallinn Pedagogical Institute (now, Tallinn University). From 1991 to 1995 he was a visiting professor at the Chair of Finno-Ugric Languages at the University of Helsinki, and from 1995 to 2006. he was a professor at the Chair of Estonian at the University of Tartu. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Tartu and continues to work as a Senior Research Fellow. From 1997 until 2006 he was the chairman of Mother Tongue Society. Jüri Viikberg
Jüri is a small borough ( et, alevik) in Harju County, northern Estonia. It is located southeast of the capital Tallinn, by the Tallinn–Tartu road (E263), directly after the intersection with Tallinn Ring Road (nr. 11). Jüri is the administrative centre of Rae Parish. Jüri has a population of 3,426 as of 1 January 2012. In 2011, Jüri was the center of population of Estonia. Jüri has grown out of two parts: the centre of Sommerling kolkhoz (former Rosenhagen Manor) in the west and construction industry base with a residential area (former Jüri church and village) in the east. Johannes Voldemar Veski
Johannes Voldemar Veski (27 June 1873 Vaidavere, Tartu County – 28 March 1968 Tartu) was an Estonian linguist. From 1896 until 1899, he studied at the University of Tartu; at the beginning he studied religion and thereafter nature sciences. From 1920 until 1938, he taught at the University of Tartu.
