Clive Bourne
Sir Clive Bourne (27 September 1942 in Stoke Newington, London – 10 January 2007 in Nevis, West Indies) was a British businessman and philanthropist, particularly known for his work on city academies. Early life Clive Bourne was born in a Stoke Newington hospital, but his family was from Ilford; his father, Moss Bourne, was a founder of Ilford Synagogue. He was educated at the William McEntee School, Walthamstow but left at age 15, and worked in an import-export business. Career He realised the need to speed up deliveries between the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, and in 1962 set up an overnight parcel service, Seabourne Express Courier. South Hackney
South Hackney is an area of Hackney in London, England within the Borough of Hackney. It is about northeast of Charing Cross. The Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy on the corner of Victoria Park Road and Lammas Walk utilises the buildings of the former French Hospital (La Providence), a home for elderly Huguenots. The French Hospital was built in the 1860s in the style of a French-Flemish chateau, designed by Robert Lewis Roumieu. The area just south of Well Street features social housing such as the Kingshold and Shore Estates. Victoria Park (known colloquially as Vicky Park or the People's Park) is a park in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London, England. It is the largest park in Tower Hamlets and one of London's most visited green spaces with approximately 9 million visitors every year. The park spans of open space and opened to the public in 1845. Cardinal Pole Catholic School is a mixed, voluntary aided secondary school located in the Homerton area of the London Borough of Hackney, United Kingdom. Following the 'Building Schools for the Future' programme, all pupils (years 7-13) are housed in the same building on Morning Lane. Robert Lewis Roumieu
Robert Lewis Roumieu (1814 – 1877) otherwise R.L. Roumieu, was a 19th-century English architect whose designs include Milner Square in Islington and an idiosyncratic vinegar warehouse at 33–35 Eastcheap in the City of London. A pupil of Benjamin Dean Wyatt, he worked in partnership with Alexander Dick Gough between 1836 and 1848. Life and career Roumieu was of Huguenot descent and his middle name is occasionally spelled "Louis". The Roumieu family originated from Languedoc, and the name has been listed among those of Huguenot refugees who settled in Great Britain and Ireland during the reign of Louis XIV (1643–1714). Roumieu's father John was a solicitor, while his grandfather Abraham Roumieu (1734–1780) had been an architect. Roumieu was articled to the architect Benjamin Dean Wyatt in 1831. French Hospital (La Providence)
The French Hospital was founded in 1718 in Finsbury on behalf of poor French Protestants and their descendants residing in Great Britain. In the 1860s it moved into the spectacular purpose-built hospital designed by Robert Lewis Roumieu in Victoria Park, Hackney, and then in the 1940s moved out of London to Compton's Lea, Horsham, West Sussex. Since 1959 it has been located in Rochester, Kent and today provides almshouse accommodation for Huguenot descendants.
