Mossbank, Saskatchewan
Mossbank is a town in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The town is south of Old Wives Lake and 68 km south of Moose Jaw. History Mossbank was incorporated in 1912 as an extension of the railroad from Expanse. The townsite was chosen by the Canadian National Railway (CNR) rail line with an adjacent townsite of Raycraft being established to the north by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) rail line. A number of significant historical events have taken place in Mossbank and area. Three of the most prominent were the first meeting between a First Nations people and the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP); the establishment of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) No. 2 Bombing and Gunnery School; and the famous 1957 Debate between Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas and Ross Thatcher, who would later also serve as Premier of Saskatchewan. Assiniboia
Assiniboia District refers to two historical districts of Canada's Northwest Territories. The name is taken from the Assiniboine First Nation. Ardill is a hamlet in RM of Lake Johnston No. 102, Saskatchewan, Canada. Listed as a designated place by Statistics Canada, the hamlet had a listed population of 0 in the Canada 2006 Census. All that currently remains is the bar which was issued liquor licence #1. Ardill is located between Assiniboia and Moose Jaw, south of Old Wives Lake and at the northern end of Lake of the Rivers. Demographics Ardill, like so many other small communities throughout Saskatchewan, has struggled to maintain a population resulting in a ghost town with no population. Previously, Ardill was incorporated under village status, but was restructured as a hamlet under the jurisdiction of the Rural municipality of Lake Johnston. Assiniboia is a town in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It is located south-southwest of Moose Jaw beside Highway 2 and Highway 13. History The Dominion Land Survey's description of the area around Assiniboia is Sec.18, Twp.8, R.29, W2. It was first settled by people of English, French, Romanian, Scottish, and Scandinavian descent. From 30 March 1908 to 23 November 1912, the post office at this location was named Leeville, Saskatchewan. The settlement of Assiniboia originated on 12 October 1912, when the Canadian Pacific Railway put 980 lots up for sale at the townsite as it built a branch line through southern Saskatchewan. Bateman, Saskatchewan
Bateman is a locality in the southwest region of Saskatchewan, Canada, north of the Red Coat Trail. It was named after Jim Bateman, the first settler to come to the area with his family in 1908. Bateman was once a prosperous community, which had a peak population of more than 300 citizens in the late 1920s. In 2000, the last resident left, and many of the remaining buildings were torn down by the government of Saskatchewan. History Upon arrival in 1908, Jim Bateman took possession of a quarter section of land on the banks of Notukeu Creek (a tributary of Wood River). In 1911, Bateman opened a post office. His daughter Lydia was sworn in as the post mistress and drove up to St. Boswells, northwest of Bateman, with her father to pick up the community's first mail bag. Expanse, Saskatchewan is an unincorporated area in the rural municipality of Lake Johnston No. 102, in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Expanse is located just south of Old Wives Lake on a grid road. The grid connects to Highway 2 near Ardill in south central Saskatchewan. Just to the south of Highway 2 is Lake of the Rivers. Expanse is too small to be enumerated as a separate entity during the census taking, so it was a part of the population given for rural municipality of Lake Johnston No. 102. Old Wives, Saskatchewan
Old Wives is an unincorporated community in the Rural Municipality of Hillsborough No. 132, Saskatchewan, Canada. History The village that became Old Wives was formed about 1900, but it was not until 1929 that the community officially got the name. Mail delivery began 1911, when Tom Lundrigan began bringing in the mail from the post office in Mortlach. Eventually, a post office was open January 1, 1912, and remained open until it closed on October 10, 1969. The area was home to several schools, with the first opening in 1916. Bay Island School, officially Bay Island School District #4362, was a one-room school on Highway 363 just east of Old Wives, which served the community from 1919 to 1950. The building still stands today. The first general store in town opened in Mr. Bill Sheldon’s house in 1920. The March West was the initial journey of the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) to the Canadian Prairies, Canadian prairies, made between July 8 and October 9, 1874. It was the result of the force being deployed to what is now southern Alberta in response to the Cypress Hills Massacre and subsequent fears of a US military intervention. Their ill-planned and arduous journey of nearly became known as the "March West" and was later portrayed by the force as an epic journey of endurance. Background Sir John A. Macdonald acquired approval for his new force on May 23, 1873, after Parliament, following a cursory debate, passed the ''Mounted Police Act'' into law unopposed.
