Morton, Manitoba
The Rural Municipality of Morton is a former rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was originally incorporated as a rural municipality on November 1, 1890. It ceased on January 1, 2015, as a result of its provincially mandated amalgamation with the Town of Boissevain to form the Municipality of Boissevain – Morton. The former RM was located in the southwestern part of the province, on the border with the state of North Dakota in the United States. Its population in the 2006 census was 718 persons, a decrease from 760 persons in 2001. The International Peace Garden is located partially in the territory of the former RM of Morton, along the North Dakota border. Most of Manitoba's Turtle Mountain Provincial Park lies in the southwest corner of the former RM. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the 2016 Census. Rolette County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,187. Its county seat is Rolla. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873, with territory partitioned from Buffalo County. Turtle Mountain Provincial Park is a provincial park located in the southwestern portion of the Canadian province of Manitoba. Within it are the Adam Lake and Max Lake campgrounds. The park is known for its bike trails, fishing, back country cabins and canoe routes. The park is very popular with families and outdoor enthusiasts.
