Mormon Literature
Mormon literature is generally considered to have begun a few years before the March 1830 publication of the Book of Mormon. Since then, Mormon literature has grown to include more scripture, as well as histories, fiction, biographies, poetry, hymns, drama and other forms. Mormon Fiction
Mormon fiction is generally fiction by or about members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), who are also referred to as Latter-day Saints or Mormons. Its history is commonly divided into four sections as first organized by Eugene England: foundations, home literature, the "lost" generation, and faithful realism. During the first fifty years of the church's existence, 1830–1880, fiction was not popular, though Parley P. Pratt wrote a fictional '' Dialogue between Joseph Smith and the Devil''. With the emergence of the novel and short stories as popular reading material, Orson F. Whitney called on fellow members to write inspirational stories. During this "home literature" movement, church-published magazines published many didactic stories and Nephi Anderson wrote the novel ''Added Upon''. BYU Studies
''BYU Studies Quarterly'' is an academic journal covering a broad array of topics related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormon studies). It is published by the church-owned Brigham Young University. The journal is abstracted and indexed in the ATLA Religion Database. History Originally proposed as ''Wasatch Review'', the periodical was established as ''Brigham Young University Studies'' and was first printed in January 1959, as an issue of ''Brigham Young University Bulletin'' printed by BYU Press. Whitney Awards
The Whitney Awards are awards given annually for novels by LDS authors. Established in 2007, they are named after Orson F. Whitney, a prominent early member of the LDS Church. There are several categories for which novels may be nominated. The Whitney Awards are a semi-independent non-profit organization affiliated with the LDStorymakers, a guild for LDS authors. A Motley Vision
A Motley Vision is an online multi-author blog featuring criticism of the Mormon arts, LDS literature and film in particular. It was launched by William Morris on June 2, 2004. It won the Association for Mormon Letters award for criticism in 2005 for "Its writers have made serious efforts to give sustained discussion to important issues, rather than simply aggregating fragments and chatter. The organization and coherence of the site, with its archives and references, has made possible the very sort of communal discussion of art and literature that AML encourages at its conferences, but does so asynchronously and electronically, allowing a greater breadth of participation across space and time." Mormon Folk Music
Mormon folk music is primarily composed of folk music which was sung by Mormon pioneers in present-day Utah from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. A notable historical component of Utah music, the popularity of Mormon folk music declined along with traditional music nationally after the advent of music recording. However, the popularity of uniquely Mormon folk music had already begun its decline before the end of the 19th century. Mormon art comprises all visual art created to depict the principles and teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), as well as art deriving from the inspiration of an artist's LDS religious views. Mormon art includes painting, sculpture, quilt work, photography, graphic art, and other mediums, and shares common attributes reflecting Latter-day Saint teachings and values. This list of pageants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delineates those annual outdoor theatrical performance produced by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). This list of films of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) includes the non-commercial motion pictures commissioned by or officially produced by the church. Such films were originally used in the homes or worship services of church members, or in visitors' centers on Temple Square or near one of the church's temples. Most church films were produced by LDS Motion Picture Studios. Since the opening of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah in 1993, some feature-length films were premiered and exclusively shown in its Legacy Theatre, prior to release for broader use. In the 1970s, the church also commissioned Brigham Young University (BYU) to produce short films for use in the Church Educational System. Mormon poetry (or Latter Day Saint poetry) is poetry written by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) about spiritual topics or themes. Mormons have a long history of writing poetry relevant to their religious beliefs and to the Mormon experience.
