Moonta, South Australia
Moonta is a town on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia, north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide. It is one of three towns known as the Copper Coast or "Little Cornwall" for their shared copper mining history. Description The town's centre is about south west of Kadina, site of Wallaroo Mines, and south of the port of Wallaroo. There are 11 suburbs surrounding central Moonta, each being a distinct historic locality or hamlet. These are: Cross Roads, East Moonta, Hamley, Kooroona, Moonta Bay, Moonta Mines, North Moonta, North Yelta, Paramatta, Port Hughes and Yelta. At the 2011 census, the Moonta township and the adjacent suburbs of Cross Roads and Yelta had a combined population of 681. The Copper Coast Council is a local government area in the Australian state of South Australia located at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula. It was established in 1997 and its seat is in Kadina. Description The Copper Coast Council is located at the northern end of Yorke Peninsula adjoining the coastline with Spencer Gulf between the settlement in Tickera in the north and the northern boundary of Nalyappa in the south. East Moonta is a rural locality at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula and a satellite village to the town of Moonta. It is located in the Copper Coast Council. Description The modern locality was established when the name and boundaries were selected in January 1999. Land use within East Moonta is divided between cultural heritage conservation, primary production and residential use. Moonta Bay is located in the Copper Coast region of Northern Yorke Peninsula South Australia, adjacent to the historic town of Moonta, South Australia, Moonta and Port Hughes, South Australia, Port Hughes. Description At the Census in Australia#2006, 2006 census, Moonta Bay had a population of 2,042. The area is a popular tourist destination, with attractions including the beach and jetty where children are able to swim in a netted area. The area is supposed to be shark proof but there has been a hole in the net for 20 years. The area is more popular to jump from the jetty into the deeper water. The jetty is also a popular fishing area particularly for those wanting to catch squid. Moonta Cemetery
The Moonta Cemetery in Moonta, South Australia was established under the Moonta Cemetery Trust in May 1866. Burials had occurred prior to that, with the town having been surveyed and land sold in March 1863. Plans for the cemetery were made in 1867 with walls erected between 1871 and 1876, the front gates made by J. H. Horwood and Co. of Adelaide. J. H. Horwood and Co. also cast the copper bell installed in 1896. The Moonta Cemetery, including wall, gates and waiting room were included in the South Australian Heritage Register on 28 November 1985. It is now managed by the District Council of the Copper Coast. Moonta Mines is a locality at the northern end of the Yorke Peninsula, adjoining the town of Moonta. It is located in the Copper Coast Council. From 1861 to 1923, it was the centre of a copper mining industry that formed colonial South Australia's largest mining enterprise. The Corporate Town of Moonta was a local government area in South Australia from 1872 to 1984, centred on the town of Moonta. History The town was proclaimed on 1 August 1872, following local debate over the merits of local government earlier in the year. It was divided into four wards: North, East, West and South, each electing two councillors. The new council decided not to build their own town hall for financial reasons, but instead decided to collaborate with the trustees of the Moonta Institute in building a replacement institute building on council-owned land. The new building would include a council chamber and corporation offices, a public hall, a reading room and other facilities. The new institute and council chamber was opened by Governor William C. F. Robinson in September 1885. The corporation instituted its own electric lighting system and plant in 1917, which replaced the previous privately-run gas system. MV ''Moonta'' is a 1931 built Australian coastal passenger ship. Later in life she became the landlocked casino ship and tourist attraction ''Casino Le Lydia'' in Le Barcarès, France. Service years ''Moonta'' was launched in June 1931 Burmeister & Wain shipyard in Copenhagen, Denmark for the Adelaide Steamship Company. She started service with a six-day itinerary, disembarking in Adelaide and ending in Port Lincoln, usually with four or five calls along the way. ''Moonta'' became well known and beloved for her excellent service and relaxing voyages, being called the perfect "romantic holiday" ship. After serving in World War II ''Moonta'' continued her Australian coastal service until 1955, when ''Moonta'' was sold to the Greek Hellenic Mediterranean Lines for cruising.
