''Moonlight on the Range'' is a 1937 American Western film directed by Sam Newfield and written by Fred Myton. The film stars Fred Scott, Al St. John, Lois January, Dick Curtis, Frank LaRue and Jimmy Aubrey. The film was released on October 6, 1937, by Spectrum Pictures. Plot Jeff Peters and Tom Killer Dane are look-alike half brothers, Tom decides to kill one of Jeff's friends and then make a raid while impersonating Jeff which leads to Jeff's arrest. Sam Newfield, born Samuel Neufeld, (December 6, 1899 - November 10, 1964), also known as Sherman Scott or Peter Stewart, was an American B-movie Film director, director, one of the most prolific in American film history—he is credited with directing over 250 feature films in a career which began during the silent era and ended in 1958. In addition to his staggering feature output, he also directed one -and two-reel comedy Short film, shorts, training films, industrial films, TV episodes and pretty much anything anyone would pay him for. Because of this massive output—he would sometimes direct more than 20 films in a single year—he has been called the most prolific director of the sound era. Many of Newfield's films were made for Producers Releasing Corporation, PRC Pictures. This was a film production company headed by his brother Sigmund Neufeld. Carl Mathews (February 19, 1903 – May 3, 1959), also sometimes credited as Carl Matthews, was an American character actor and stuntman of the 1930s through 1950s. Born on February 19, 1903 in Oklahoma, his first film role would be in ''Rough Riding Ranger'' in 1935. Over the next 33 years, Mathews appeared in over 200 films, shorts, and television shows, either as a performer or a stuntman. Early life Mathews was born in 1903 on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma to Sam and Hattie Mathews, and grew up in Muskogee, Oklahoma This birth year of 1903 holds throughout his census records through 1940, however, his death certificate lists his date of birth as 1899. William McCall (May 19, 1870 – January 10, 1938), was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 190 films between 1918 and 1938. He was born in Delavan, Illinois, and died in Hollywood, California. McCall acted on stage before he began working in film for Vitagraph. During his early film activity he was credited as Billy McCall, and he performed primarily in comic roles in farces, including ''Huns and Hyphens'' (1918) and ''Frauds and Frenzies'' (1918). Later, as William McCall, he acted in serials and Westerns. He continued in films through the introduction of sound, ending his career in 1937. Jed Buell (May 21, 1897 - September 29, 1961) was an American film producer, director, and screenwriter who specialized in low-budget B pictures in a variety of subjects including singing cowboy films featuring midgets and black actors. Career Buell, born in Denver, Colorado to Dora Phelps and William J. Buell, was educated at the Corona School and North Denver High School. He began his film career as treasurer of the Denver Orpheum Theatre and Denham Theatre as well as the business manager of Denver's Elitch Theatre. In 1928 he became general manager of California Universal Chair Theaters. He joined Mack Sennett as a publicist and in 1930 was made director of all publicity at the Mack Sennett Studios in Hollywood.
