Moodiesburn
Moodiesburn is a village in Scotland, located northeast of Glasgow, in the North Lanarkshire council area. It is situated on the north side of the A80 road and between the M73 and M80 motorways which converge nearby. Moodiesburn does not directly adjoin any other settlements, though the contiguous villages of Chryston and Muirhead are located a short distance to the west (the boundary being the Strathkelvin railway path) with Stepps just beyond, while outer parts of Cumbernauld lie to the east; however, its centre is about from Moodiesburn. The village's economic standing greatly declined in the latter half of the 20th century, following the Auchengeich mining disaster and the disintegration of local employment. In the early 21st century the economic demographic of the population has improved; good transport links enable a significant proportion of the population travel to Glasgow or nearby large towns for employment in the professional and commercial sphere. Stoneyetts Hospital
Stoneyetts Hospital (also Stoneyetts Certified Institution for Mental Defectives) was a psychiatric hospital located in Moodiesburn, near Glasgow. Opened in 1913, Stoneyetts served as an important source of employment for residents within the expanding Moodiesburn area. The function of the institution changed throughout its existence: it originally cared for those with epilepsy, before housing people with intellectual disability, and from 1937 treating those with mental disorders. By the early 1970s there was an emphasis toward Geriatric psychiatry, psychogeriatric care at the hospital. Complaints against Stoneyetts began to surface in the mid 1980s, preceding its controversial closure and demolition in 1992. M80 Motorway
The M80 is a motorway in Scotland, Scotland's central belt, running between Glasgow and Stirling via Cumbernauld and Denny, Falkirk, Denny and linking the M8 motorway (Scotland), M8, M73 motorway, M73 and M9 motorway (Scotland), M9 motorways. Following completion in 2011, the motorway is long. Despite being only a two lane motorway, parts of the M80 Stepps Bypass are used by around 60,000 vehicles per day. The M80 was constructed in three sections. The first section, from the village of Haggs to the M9 near Stirling, opened in 1974, followed in 1992 by the section from the M8 to the town of Stepps. Chryston
Chryston is a village in North Lanarkshire, around east of Glasgow, in Scotland. It lies north of its sister village, Muirhead, which is on the A80. The village has around double Muirhead's population, although the exact boundary between the two modern villages is difficult to find. History The etymology of the name is uncertain but may refer to the "town of Cristinus". Several old documents show Chryston with various spellings including maps by Timothy Pont, William Forrest, Thomas Richardson, and William Roy. In the 18th century, Chryston had one of the four schools in the parish of Cadder. William Barclay, himself a school teacher, reported the low pay of his profession in the Old Statistical Account. One gazetteer, Samuel Lewis, from around 1846, describes a recently established library. He quotes 555 inhabitants. A80 Road (Scotland)
The A80 is a road in Scotland, running from the A8 to Moodiesburn, north east of Glasgow. Prior to the M80 opening, the A80 was one of Scotland's busiest truck roads. Original Route The A80 was once the main route from Glasgow to Stirling. It has now been superseded by the M80 motorway which roughly follows the route of the original A80. A80 / M80 Upgrade project History One of Scotland's worst traffic jams has a reputation for being the A80. In 1992, the M80 Stepps bypass opened between the M8 and Stepps to relieve pressure on the road. M73 Motorway
The M73 is a motorway in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is long and connects the M74 motorway with the M80 motorway, providing an eastern bypass for Glasgow. The short stretch between junctions 1 and 2 is part of unsigned international E-road network E05, where it continues along the M8 through Glasgow. To the south, the M74 motorway is also part of the E05. Route Starting at the M74 junction 4 (M73 junction 1) by the River Clyde, it proceeds north with Birkenshaw to the east and crosses the Whifflet railway line before meeting the M8 and A8 at a three-level interchange, west of Swinton. The North Clyde railway line passes underneath the M73 immediately north of this interchange. The M73 then passes alongside Woodend Loch before reaching junction 2A at Gartcosh. Muirhead, North Lanarkshire
Muirhead is a small town approximately north-east of Glasgow city centre. Nearby villages and towns include Chryston, Garnkirk, Gartcosh, Moodiesburn, Lenzie and Stepps. Muirhead has a population of around 1,390. It is a commuter town to Glasgow with road links with the A80/ M80 and frequent bus services the X3 and 38C. Muirhead is located approximately two miles from Gartcosh, Lenzie and Stepps railway stations. History The name may be related to the nearby Muirside. Norman Buchan
Norman Findlay Buchan (27 October 1922 – 23 October 1990) was a Labour Party politician, who was on the left-wing of the party, and represented the West Renfrewshire seat from 1964 until 1983 and the Paisley South seat from 1983 until his death in 1990. Early life A schoolteacher based in Rutherglen, he was interested in folk music, compiling a book entitled ''101 Scottish Songs'', often referred to as ''The Wee Red Book''. Political career At the 1964 Rutherglen by-election, he only lost the Labour selection meeting fairly narrowly to Gregor Mackenzie, and he went on to take West Renfrewshire from the Conservatives at the general election later that year.
