Chryston
Chryston is a village in North Lanarkshire, around east of Glasgow, in Scotland. It lies north of its sister village, Muirhead, North Lanarkshire, Muirhead, which is on the A80 road (Great Britain), A80. The village has around double Muirhead's population, although the exact boundary between the two modern villages is difficult to find. History The etymology of the name is uncertain but may refer to the "town of Cristinus". Several old documents show Chryston with various spellings including maps by Timothy Pont, William Forrest, Thomas Richardson, and William Roy. In the 18th century, Chryston had one of the four schools in the parish of Cadder. William Barclay, himself a school teacher, reported the low pay of his profession in the Old Statistical Account. One gazetteer, Samuel Lewis, from around 1846, describes a recently established library. He quotes 555 inhabitants. Coatbridge and Chryston (Gaelic: ''Coatbridge agus Chryston'') is a constituency of the Scottish Parliament covering part of the council area of North Lanarkshire. It elects one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. It is also one of nine constituencies in the Central Scotland electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole. Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) using the first-past-the-post voting system. It was created for the 2005 general election, covering the whole area of the Coatbridge and Chryston constituency and parts of the Hamilton North and Bellshill seat. A small area in the eastern side of Coatbridge lies within the Airdrie and Shotts constituency. Traditionally, the area served by the seat and its predecessors was the safest Labour area in Scotland. Its previous MP was Hugh Gaffney of the Labour Party who gained the seat at the 2017 general election, succeeding SNP MP Phil Boswell who had held the seat since the SNP landslide victory in 2015. Chryston High School
Chryston High School is a six-year non-denominational secondary school situated in Chryston, North Lanarkshire Scotland. The school plays an important role in the community with the students assisting with local authorities. The school was awarded the Charter Mark in September 2007, for excellence in customer service. Academic Standards HM Inspectorate of Education, in their inspection in 2013, judged that the learning environment and support for the students was very good. The overall quality of attainment S1 to S6 was rated as 'Good', with particular strengths noted in pupil motivation and in the caring, inclusive environment. New building Construction of the new £22 million Chryston High School building started in 2010 and was completed in mid-2012, with education commencing on 20 August 2012. Muirhead is a small town approximately north-east of Glasgow city centre. Nearby villages and towns include Chryston, Garnkirk, Gartcosh, Moodiesburn, Lenzie and Stepps. Muirhead has a population of around 1,390. It is a commuter town to Glasgow with road links with the A80/ M80 and frequent bus services the 37c x35, x37, and x3. Moodiesburn
Moodiesburn is a village in Scotland, located northeast of Glasgow, in the North Lanarkshire council area. It is situated on the north side of the A80 road and between the M73 and M80 motorways which converge nearby. Moodiesburn does not directly adjoin any other settlements, though the villages of Chryston and Muirhead are located a short distance to the west (the boundary being the Bothlin Burn), with Stepps beyond, and outer parts of Cumbernauld lie to the east; however, the town centres are about apart. Once a thriving community, the village's economic standing greatly declined in the latter half of the 20th century, following the Auchengeich mining disaster and the disintegration of local employment.
