Montréal-Centre (provincial Electoral District)
Montréal-Centre was a former provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1867 election. Its final general election was in 1886 (and there was a by-election in 1887). It disappeared in the 1890 election and its successor electoral districts were Montréal division no. 2 and Montréal division no. 6. Montreal (region)
Montreal is one of the administrative regions of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is also a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (TE) and a census division (CD), for both of which its geographical code is 66. Prior to the merger of the municipalities in ''Region 06'' in 2002, the administrative region was co-extensive with the Montreal Urban Community. Located in the southern part of the province, the territory includes several of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago in the Saint Lawrence River, including the Island of Montreal, Nuns' Island (Île des Sœurs), Île Bizard, Saint Helen's Island (Île Sainte-Hélène), Île Notre-Dame, Dorval Island (Île Dorval), and several others. Luther Hamilton Holton
Luther Hamilton Holton (January 22, 1817 – March 14, 1880) was a Canadian businessman and political figure. He represented Châteauguay as a Liberal member in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1880. He became Minister of Finance, Governor of McGill University, board member of the Montreal Board of Trade, and an early developer of the railroads in Canada. Early life and education He was born at Sheffield's Corners in Leeds County, Upper Canada in 1817 and went to Montreal to live with his uncle after his father's death in 1826. At the age of 12, after completing his schooling, he became a clerk in his uncle's business. Seven years later, he joined the firm of Henderson and Hooker, who were involved in transporting goods and passengers along the St. Lawrence and lower Great Lakes; in 1845, he became a senior partner in the firm, now Hooker and Holton, on Henderson's death. James McShane
James McShane (November 7, 1833 – December 14, 1918) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He was mayor of Montreal, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, and a member of the House of Commons of Canada. Background Born in Montreal, the son of James McShane and Ellen Quinn, he worked as an exporter of livestock to England. He served as a volunteer in the militia during the Fenian raids in 1866. Horatio Admiral Nelson
Horatio Admiral Nelson (October 22, 1816 – December 24, 1882) was an American-born merchant, manufacturer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Montréal-Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1878 to 1881 as a Liberal. He was born in Richmond, New Hampshire, the son of Ezekiel Nelson and Ruth Harkins, and was educated in the United States. Nelson was a travelling salesman until 1841, when he settled in Montreal. In 1841, he married Maria D. Davison. He was co-owner of Nelson and Butters, which manufactured brooms and other articles made from wood; the company became Nelson Wood & Co. in 1861 and H.A. Nelson and Sons in 1874. Alexander Walker Ogilvie
Alexander Walker Ogilvie (May 7, 1829 – March 31, 1902) was a Canadian politician and businessman. He and his brothers, William and John, are remembered for their pioneering work in the Canadian milling trade with their company, A. W. Ogilvie & Co. of Montreal, and as pioneers and believers in the success of the Canadian West. Their company expanded to become the largest flour milling company in the British Empire. He was born in Côte-Saint-Michel, Lower Canada (now Quebec) which is on the island of Montreal, the son of Alexander Ogilvie and Helen Watson. He attended the Howden and Taggart Academy in Montreal. His father and his uncle, James Goudie, operated a flour mill called Glenora Mills on the Lachine Canal. Alexander went into partnership with his uncle in 1852. Charles Alexander (politician)
Charles Alexander (13 June 1816 – 5 November 1905) was a Scottish-born merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Montréal-Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1874 to 1875 as a Liberal. He was born in Dundee, the son of John Alexander and Murina Mudie, and was educated there. He worked for a firm that manufactured marmalade. Alexander was married Margaret Kyle in 1838. In 1840, he came to Lower Canada with his family after the company opened a branch in Montreal. In 1841, he operated a business in London, Upper Canada with a partner but, in 1842, returned to Montreal and opened a confectionery store there the following year. He expanded into manufacturing, wholesale sales and catering; Alexander also operated a dining room and ice cream parlour. Alexander served on the municipal council for Montreal from 1865 to 1875. The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP; french: Parti libéral du Québec, PLQ) is a provincial political party in Quebec. It has been independent of the federal Liberal Party of Canada since 1955. The Conservative Party of Quebec (french: Parti conservateur du Québec) was a political party in Quebec, Canada, from 1867 until 1936, when it merged with members of the Action libérale nationale to form the Union Nationale. Edward Carter, (1 March 1822 – 27 September 1883) was a Canadian lawyer, professor and politician. Carter was a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the Brome electoral district in Quebec. He also represented Montréal-Centre in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1867 to 1871. His name appears as Edward Brock Carter in some sources. Born in Trois-Rivières, Lower Canada (now Quebec), the son of George Carter and Mary Ann Short, he was educated in Trois-Rivières and at the Collège de Nicolet.
