Santa Maria Novella is a Romanesque architecture, Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Pisani #45 in the village (''frazione'') of Marti, Montopoli in Val d'Arno, Marti, in the town limits of Montopoli in Val d'Arno, in the province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. History and Decoration A church at the site was begun in 1332. Built with brick, the exterior has an austere and rustic with some pilasters and blind arches. The Sanctuary of Madonna di San Romano, also known as the Sanctuary of Mother Mary of the Divine Grace, is a renaissance-style, Marian sanctuary and Franciscan convent, located in the ''frazione'' of San Romano in the territory of the town of Montopoli in Val d'Arno, province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. History Originally, the site hosted a chapel titled Santa Maria a Valiana, which housed a venerated image of the Madonna, engraved on an oak trunk. In 1515 the church was enlarged by Medici, and the administration was transferred to the Franciscans. It has a single nave plan with chapels on the sides; the apse and the roof, destroyed by an allied bombardment, were rebuilt after world war II. Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli (; 1281 – 3 September 1328) was an Italian ''condottiero'' and duke of Lucca. Biography Castruccio was born in Lucca, a member of the noble family of Antelminelli, of the Ghibelline party. In 1300 he was exiled with his parents and others of their faction by the Guelphs "Black" party, then in the ascendant.
