Montferland () is a municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It was created on 1 January 2005 from the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Bergh and Didam. Beek, Montferland
Beek is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located in the municipality Montferland, about 5 km southeast of Didam.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. History It was first mentioned in 1206 as Beke, and means brook. The St Martinus Church dates from 1868. The tower was built in 1884 and has 15th century elements. Loil
Loil () is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Montferland. Loil forms a single urban area with Didam and is often referred to as a neighbourhood, but it is an independent village. History It was first mentioned around 1200 as Loel, and means "little open forest". Even though it is spelt Loil, the prounouncement is Lool. ’t Hof Loil was a manor house which was first mentioned in 1390; though, the building was older than the castle. A fire destroyed the manor house in 2014. The village of Loil developed around the manor house. Built around 1300, Loil Castle belonged to the Duchy of Cleves. In 1457, Lord of Bergh purchased the castle and the ''heerlijkheid''. In 1711, it was transferred to the '' Dros'' of Didam. The castle was demolished around 1920. Zeddam
Zeddam is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located in the municipality of Montferland, about 7 km south of Doetinchem. Zeddam was a separate municipality until 1821, when it was merged with Bergh. History Zeddam was first mentioned between 1139 and 1148 as Sydehem. The etymology is unclear. Zeddam is located on the flank of the Paasberg along the road from 's-Heerenberg to Doetinchem. It used to belong to the Lord of Bergh. The St. Oswaldus Church has a tower from around 1500 with a 14th century base. The church dates from 1891. Castle Montferland was a castle from the 9th century. The castle Uplade which was destroyed in 1066 may reference the same castle. It was demolished in 1527. In 1699, it was replaced by an estate which nowadays serves as a restaurant. 's-Heerenberg
s-Heerenberg is a city on the Dutch-German border, in the Province of Gelderland, Netherlands. It is located about 5 km north of the German Emmerich, and about south of Doetinchem. It received city rights in 1379. 's-Heerenberg is the location of one of the most important castles of the Netherlands: Huis Bergh. The Huis Bergh contains a panel of the Archangel Gabriel from the famous altar piece Maestà by Duccio. The castle is surrounded to the west by a forest, part of the larger nature reserve Bergherbos. Mechteld ten Ham was accused of sorcery. She demanded a trial, and failed the water test, because she remained floating on the water. During torture, she confessed to being a witch, and was burnt at the stake on 25 July 1605. In 2004, a statue was revealed in her honour. In 2015, her statue was set on fire. Didam
Didam (locally, Diem) is a town in the Netherlands in the eastern part of Netherlands in the region of "De Achterhoek", province of Gelderland. It is located in the municipality of Montferland about 18 km east of Arnhem, which is the capital of the province, and about 11 km west from Doetinchem. Braamt
Braamt is a village in the Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality of Montferland in the Provinces of the Netherlands, province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. History It was first mentioned in 1241 as Brameth, and means "place where Blackberry, blackberries grow". De Kemnade is a ''havezate'' near Braamt on the Oude IJssel. Azewijn
Azewijn is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland and the municipality Montferland, and is about 3 km east of the town of 's-Heerenberg. The larger part of Azewijn is known as "Groot-Azewijn" (''Greater Azewijn''), with the hamlet "Klein-Azewijn" (''Lesser Azewijn'') about 1 km to the north.
