Montana Highway 66 (MT 66) is a state highway in the US state of Montana. It begins at an intersection with U.S. Highway 191 (US 191) in far southwestern Phillips County and runs northerly to the town of Fort Belknap in Blaine County. Approximately of the northern end of the route is within the boundaries of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, running through the bulk of its territory. Route description MT 66 starts at an intersection with US 191 approximately southwest of Malta. It proceeds in a generally northwesterly direction, skirting the western edge of the Little Rocky Mountains. The road turns north just before crossing the county line from Phillips County into Blaine County, and subsequently enters the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation where it remains for the rest of its journey. Landusky is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Phillips County, Montana, United States, with a population of 22 per the 2020 census. It is in the southwestern part of the county, in the southwestern part of the Little Rocky Mountains. It sits in the valley of Rock Creek, between Mill Gulch to the northeast and Montana Gulch to the northwest. Fort Belknap Agency is a census-designated place (CDP) in Blaine County, Montana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,293. Fort Belknap Indian Reservation Fort Belknap Agency is the capital of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. It is located at the northern end of the reservation at the junction of U.S. Route 2 and Montana Highway 66. Phillips County is a county in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,217. Its county seat is Malta. Before February 5, 1915, Phillips County was part of Blaine County, and before 1912 both were part of Chouteau County. It was named for rancher and state senator Benjamin D. Phillips. Its northern boundary is the Canada–United States border with Saskatchewan. The Missouri River defines its southern boundary. Fort Belknap Indian Reservation
The Fort Belknap Indian Reservation ( ats, ’ak3ɔ́ɔyɔ́ɔ, lit=the fence or ats, ’ɔ’ɔ́ɔ́ɔ́nííítaan’ɔ, lit=Gros Ventre tribe, label=none) is shared by two Native American tribes, the A'aninin (Gros Ventre) and the Nakoda (Assiniboine). The reservation covers , and is located in north-central Montana. The total area includes the main portion of their homeland and off-reservation trust land. Malta ( ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Phillips County, Montana, United States, located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 2 and 191. The population was 1,860 at the 2020 census. History After James Hill and his partners built the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba railway (which in 1890 became the Great Northern Railway) across Montana's "High Line" in 1887, Malta evolved from rail siding number 54. What came to be Saco, Montana, to the east and Dodson, Montana, to the west grew from other nearby sidings. A post office was established in Malta in 1890. The community lies within the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, near the reservation's southern end. The nearby community of Lodge Pole lies to the east. The town was named for Major Hays.
