The MonsterVerse is an American multimedia franchise and shared fictional universe featuring Godzilla, King Kong, and other monster characters owned and created by Toho Co., Ltd. The franchise is produced by Legendary Pictures and co-produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The first installment was ''Godzilla'' (2014), a reboot of the ''Godzilla'' franchise, which was followed by '' Kong: Skull Island'' (2017), a reboot of the ''King Kong'' franchise, '' Godzilla: King of the Monsters'' (2019), and '' Godzilla vs. Kong'' (2021). The franchise received a generally positive reception and has been commercially successful with a combined gross of $1.950 billion worldwide. The franchise will continue with two television series and an untitled ''Godzilla vs. Kong'' sequel concurrently in production. Toho
is a Japanese film, theatre production and distribution company. It has its headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, and is one of the core companies of the Osaka-based Hankyu Hanshin Toho Group. Outside of Japan, it is best known as the producer and distributor of many '' kaiju'' and ''tokusatsu'' films, the Chouseishin ''tokusatsu'' superhero television franchise, the films of Akira Kurosawa, and the anime films of Studio Ghibli, CoMix Wave Films, TMS Entertainment and OLM, Inc. All nine of the highest-grossing Japanese films are released by Toho. ''Godzilla'' is a 2014 American monster film directed by Gareth Edwards. It is a reboot of Toho's ''Godzilla'' franchise, the 30th film in the ''Godzilla'' franchise, the first film in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, and the second ''Godzilla'' film to be completely produced by a Hollywood studio. King Ghidorah
is a fictional monster, or ''kaiju'', which first appeared in Ishirō Honda's 1964 film ''Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster''. Although the name of the character is officially trademarked by Toho as "King Ghidorah", the character was originally referred to as Ghidorah or Ghidrah in some English markets. Although King Ghidorah's design has remained largely consistent throughout its appearances (an armless, bipedal, golden and yellowish-scaled dragon with three heads, two fan-shaped wings and two tails), its origin story has varied from being an extraterrestrial planet-destroying dragon, a genetically engineered monster from the future, a guardian monster of ancient Japan, or a god from another dimension.
