Alexandre Monnet
Alexandre-Hippolyte-Xavier Monnet, C.S.Sp. (4 January 1812 – 1 December 1849) was a French bishop of the Roman Catholic Church, and the Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. He served as Vicar Apostolic of Madagascar (now the Archdiocese of Antananarivo) from 1848 until his death. Life Alexandre Monnet was born on 4 January 1812 in Mouchin, France. In 1837, at the age of 25, he was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. On 2 March 1848, he was appointed Superior General of that Congregation, a post from which he would resign on 3 October 1848. Philippe Monnet (born 31 January 1959) is a single-handed sailor from France, born in La Clusaz. He is the brother in law of French singer Julien Clerc. Biography Originally from La Clusaz, he is a pioneer of maritime routes and a single-handed and crewed sailing record holder. He has accumulated more 250 000 nautical miles in single-handed or crewed races. He set a new record during his first solo round the world trip. He sailed the 1981–82 Whitbread Round the World Race on board ''Vivanapoli''. Monnet Authority
The Monnet Authority was the first High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), between 1952 and 1955. Its president was Jean Monnet of France. Monnet resigned on Europe day 1955 following the failure of the European Defence Community and was succeeded by the Mayer Authority. There were four more High Authorities before the institutions of the ECSC were merged with those of the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Economic Community in 1967 to become the European Communities. Membership The High Authority was based temporarily in Luxembourg City and consisted of nine members; one each for the Benelux states, two for the larger states of France, Germany and Italy. Jean Monnet Foundation For Europe
The Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe is a public-utility and independent institution, created in 1978 by Jean Monnet and Henri Rieben, and dedicated to the conservation of Monnet's archives. Based in Lausanne since its creation, the foundation is located since 1981 at the Ferme de Dorigny, on the campus of the University of Lausanne. The foundation's activities range from the organization of events (conferences, dialogues, academic seminars and Gold Medal Award ceremonies) to the conservation and the enhancement of its collection of archives and documents. Antoine-Grimoald Monnet
Antoine-Grimoald Monnet (1 November 1734 – 23 May 1817) was a French mineralogist and mining specialist who became a mine inspector and wrote several treatises on mining and geology based on his travels and observations across France and neighbouring regions. Along with Jean-Étienne Guettard he published the earliest geological maps of France. Monnet was born in Champeix in the district of Issoire in a large middle-class family. He was self-taught and moved to Paris at the age of seventeen, attended lectures in chemistry by Guillaume-François Rouelle at the Jardin du Roi, and became a pharmacist's assistant to the apothecary Joseph Cigongne in Nantes. He gained fame after he began to analyze samples sent to Cigonge, publishing papers on mineral spring waters from Bains, Plombières, and Luxeuil in 1767 where he pointed out that there was hardly any dissolved minerals that could be responsible for any curative properties. Louis Claude Monnet de Lorbeau ( Mougon, Deux-Sèvres 1 January 1766 – Paris, 8 June 1819) was a French general, most notable for his failure to prevent the landing of the Walcheren expedition. Life He commanded the National Guard of Sainte-Néomaye from 1789 to 1792, but only joined the regular army on 28 March 1793, as a captain in the 36th Battalion of the Deux-Sèvres and Charente, nicknamed ''le Vengeur''. He took part in the campaigns of 1790 to 1793 during the War in the Vendée. Always at a perilous post, he fought with distinction and won his generals' confidence. In 1790, in the Fontenay affair, the 4,000-strong Republican army was attacked by 30,000 men and the brigade in which Monnet was serving was for an instant shaken by the terrible artillery fire. However, hearing of Monnet's courage, they soon formed ranks and charged this artillery, encouraging the following troops to capture the artillery from the insurgents and thus beat them into retreat.
