Mona Friedlander
Mona Renee Vera Ernesta Forward ( Friedlander, 2 June 1914 – 24 December 1993) was a British pilot and one of the eight founding pilots who started the women's section of the Air Transport Auxiliary. Early life Mona Renee Vera Ernesta Friedlander was born in Queensgate, London in June 1914. Her father was a rich banker and they lived in Park Lane. Age six her mother took her and her sister, who suffered from tuberculosis, to live in Paris. Friedlander went to school in Vienna, Switzerland and Germany, only returned to live in Britain age seventeen. She attended the LSE and took a secretarial course, which led to secretarial jobs. Age 21, she went to America as a secretary to a friend of her father. Margaret Fairweather
Margaret Fairweather (23 September 1901 – 4 August 1944) was a British aviator and one of the first eight women members of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). She was the first woman to fly a Supermarine Spitfire. Life Fairweather was born in 1901 in the West Denton part of Newcastle upon Tyne. Imperial War Museum
Imperial War Museums (IWM) is a British national museum organisation with branches at five locations in England, three of which are in London. Pauline Gower
Pauline Mary de Peauly Gower Fahie (22 July 1910 – 2 March 1947) was a British pilot and writer who established the women's branch of the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War. Early life and education Pauline Mary de Peauly Gower was born on 22 July 1910 to Dorothy Susie Eleanor (née Wills) (1882-1936) and Sir Robert Gower, MP. She had an older sister, named Dorothy Vaughan after their mother and they grew up at Sandown Court in Tunbridge Wells. Pauline Gower was educated at Beechwood Sacred Heart School, which was run by Mother Ashton-Case, a cousin of her mother. She was a strong student and excelled at music and sport. Marion Wilberforce
Marion Wilberforce (22 July 1902 – 17 December 1995) was a Scottish aviator and one of the first eight members of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA). She flew many planes including Supermarine Spitfire, Spitfires, Hawker Hurricane, Hurricanes, Avro Lancaster, Lancaster Bombers, Vickers Wellington, Wellington Bombers and De Havilland Mosquito, Mosquitos. She rose to become deputy commander of the No. 5 Ferry Pool at Hatfield, and later became commander of the No. 12 Ferry Pool at RAF Cosford, Cosford, one of only two women pool commanders in the whole ATA. Rosemary Rees Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, MBE (23 September 1901 – 8 March 1994) was a British aviator who worked for the Air Transport Auxiliary. She was second in command to Margaret Wyndham Gore, Margot Gore at Hamble-le-Rice, Hamble from the 29th September 1941 when the site became an all-women ATA ferry pool. Gabrielle Patterson
Gabrielle Ruth Millicent Patterson (; 1905–1968) was a British aviator who worked for the Air Transport Auxiliary. She was Britain's first woman flying instructor. Early life She was born in Maida Vale in London on 6 July 1905. She was the eldest of four children. Her father, Malcolm Burr, a mining engineer, earned his money as a teacher although his passion was insects. Her mother Clara Millicent Goode and her siblings moved with their father and she received an education in various European locations "including Paris, Berlin, Budapest, and Vienna". She became company secretary at her mother's family firm. She was not tall but she was well off so she was able to gain a pilots license and subsequently an instructors licence in 1931 in time for a flying event at Reading with other women pilots including Amy Johnson. Joan Hughes
Joan Lily Amelia Hughes, MBE (27 April 1918 – 16 August 1993) was a World War II ferry pilot and one of Britain's first female test pilots. She was considered a capable instructor and flew everything except flying boats. Early life Hughes was born in West Ham, Essex in 1918. Her mother was Lily Amelia Lekeup and her father Arthur Edward Hughes manufactured braids. She and her brother started flying training when she was fifteen and their parents paid the East Anglian Aero Club £2/10s an hour. At that time you could fly a plane at any age and so by 17 had she become the youngest qualified female pilot in Britain. Margaret Cunnison
Margaret Cunnison (29 May 1914 – 4 January 2004) was a Scottish aviator and the first Scottish woman flying instructor. She was one of the first women to join the Air Transport Auxiliary. Life Margaret Cunnison was born in Haddington in 1914. Her family was originally from Blairgowrie, in Perthshire, but they were living in Milngavie. Her father, James Cunnison was a lecturer in political economy at the University of Glasgow. Cunnison went to Laurel Bank School. In 1933 Cunnison entered a competition to win an "air scholarship" with the Evening News. She won lessons with the Scottish Flying Club. She got her A Licence in Scotland then traveled to Lympne, Kent, to get her B licence, and gained the second Scottish woman's commercial pilot's licence. She was already an instructor before the war and worked as an instructor with the Strathtay Aero Club.
