Molinella (Bolognese: or ) is a '' comune'' (municipality) part of Metropolitan City of Bologna in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about northeast of Bologna. Molinella borders the following municipalities: Argenta, Baricella, Budrio, Medicina. Molinella is situated in a rural area on the old ''San Donato Road'' (which in the past connected Bologna with Argenta and its port on the Po di Primaro). The municipality is crossed on the northern side by the Reno River and it is surrounded by several marshes and canals. The town has a railway station on the Bologna-Portomaggiore Railway. History The name ''Molinella'' comes from the Italian word for mill, ''molino''; That is because during the Middle Ages there was a large number of watermills in this area. The village was created before the 14th century on a hillock between the ''marshes of Marmorta and Marrara'' and just south of the Po di Primaro river. Medicina ( Bolognese: ; Eastern Bolognese: ) is an Italian ''comune'' with c. 16,000 inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, part of the region of Emilia-Romagna. Name The origins of its name (which in Italian means "medicine") are quite uncertain, and many hypotheses have been put forward. A legend tells that the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, passing through Medicina from Milan fell ill and miraculously recovered because of a snake that accidentally came into the pot of his soup. It has been proved, though, that Barbarossa did pass through Medicina but that the name of the town predates that time. In memory of this legend the '' Festa del Barbarossa'' ("Barbarossa's party") takes place every year on the 3rd weekend of September. Budrio ( Eastern Bolognese: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy; it is east of Bologna. Budrio is the birthplace of Giuseppe Barilli, better known under his pseudonym of Quirico Filopanti, an Italian mathematician and politician. Argenta ( Argentano: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna. It is located about southeast of Ferrara, and midway between Ferrara and Ravenna. Geography Argenta is situated in a flat agricultural region near the Valli di Comacchio lagoon wetlands. Much of the latter is today a wildlife sanctuary and Argenta is home of the Marsh Museum which offers many facilities for ornithology. History The town was founded by the Romans.
