Mizusawa, Iwate
was a city located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Mizusawa is home to one of the six International Latitude Observatories. The observatories were close to the parallel of 39 degrees 8 minutes north latitude. They worked together to study the Earth's "wobble" using stars selected by Dr. Kimura, the astronomer in charge of the Mizusawa station. Twelve groups of stars that had six pairs of stars each were chosen. Two groups of stars were observed at each station following a schedule of dates, time, and duration prepared by Kimura. The town of Mizusawa was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the municipalities system. The city was founded on April 1, 1954 when Mizusawa Town merged with the neighboring villages of Anetai, Shinjo, Sakuragawa, Kuroishi and Haneda. Iwate Prefecture
is a prefecture of Japan located in the Tōhoku region of Honshu. It is the second-largest Japanese prefecture at , with a population of 1,210,534 (as of October 1, 2020). was a village located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. The village of Koromogawa was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the municipalities system. Maesawa, Iwate
was a town located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Maesawa is well known for its “Maesawa beef”. Maesawa town was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the municipalities system. On April 1, 1955, Maesaa annexed the neighboring villages of Kojo, Shirayama, and a portion of the village of Seibo. On February 20, 2006, Maesawa was merged with the cities of Esashi and Mizusawa, the town of Isawa, and the village of Koromogawa (both from Isawa District), was merged to create the city of Ōshū, and no longer exists as an independent municipality. Isawa, Iwate
was a town located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Isawa is well known for its capsicum (green pepper). The name of the area is derived from the ancient Isawa tribe of Emishi who had put up fierce resistance to the Yamato court and its imperial aspirations. Isawa village proper was created on April 1, 1955 through the merger of the villages of Oyama, Natsuta and Wakayanagi. It was raised to town status on April 1, 1967. Esashi, Iwate
was a city located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Esashi village was created within Esashi District on April 1, 1899 with the establishment of the municipalities system. On February 10, 1955, it annexed the neighboring town of Iwayado and the villages of Inase, Atago, Tahara, Hirose, Sunagawa, Tamasato, Fujisato, Yonesato and Ide to form Esashi town. Esashi was raised to city status on November 3, 1958. Hisashi Kimura
was a Japanese astronomer originally from Kanazawa, Ishikawa. He devoted his career to the study and measurement of variation in latitude, building upon the work of Seth Carlo Chandler, who discovered the Chandler wobble. In 1899, he became the first director of the International Latitude Observatory at Mizusawa, Japan. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1936. He was one of the first people to be awarded the Order of Culture when it was established in 1937.
