Missouri Route 3
Route 3 is a highway in northern and central Missouri. Its northern terminus is at Route 11 south of Kirksville; its southern terminus is at Route 5/ Route 240 northwest of Fayette. Route 3 was initially Route 67, designated in 1922 between Rocheport and Fayette. It was renumbered in 1926 due to US 67. In 1934/1935, the route extended north to US 36 in Callao. The next year, the original portion from Rocheport to Fayette became part of Route 240. In 1953/1954, the route extended north to Kirksville, its current terminus. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT, ) is a state government organization in charge of maintaining public roadways of the U.S. state of Missouri under the guidance of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. Kirksville, Missouri
Kirksville is the county seat and most populous city in Adair County, Missouri. Located in Benton Township, its population was 17,530 at the 2020 census. Kirksville is home to two colleges: Truman State University and A.T. Still University. History Kirksville was laid out in 1841 on a site, and was first incorporated in 1857. Origin of name According to tradition Jesse Kirk, Kirksville's first postmaster, shared a dinner of turkey and whiskey with surveyors working in the area on the condition that they would name the town after him. Not only the first postmaster, Kirk was also the first to own a hotel and a tavern in Kirksville. Contrary to popular belief, the name of the city has no connection to John Kirk, onetime president of Truman State University from 1899 to 1925. Fayette is a city in and the county seat of Howard County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Route 5 (Missouri)
Missouri Route 5 is the longest state highway in Missouri and the only Missouri state highway to traverse the entire state. It is part of a three state, 650 mile highway 5. To the north, it continues into Iowa as Iowa Highway 5 and to the south it enters Arkansas as Highway 5. With only a few exceptions, it is two-lane for its entire length. Route 240 (Missouri)
Route 240 is a highway in the central part of Missouri. Its eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 40 about two miles (3 km) west of Columbia; its western terminus is at U.S. Route 65 in Marshall. Spur Route 240 connects the road with Rocheport. From 1922 until 1926, Route 240 from Rocheport to Fayette was Route 67. It was renumbered Route 3 in 1926; that route has since been extended north and truncated, leaving Route 240 behind. The highway was mentioned in the title of David R. Rocheport, Missouri
Rocheport is a city in Boone County, Missouri, United States. It is part of the Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 239 at the 2010 census. Rocheport includes the Rocheport Historic District, an area with buildings dating from 1830 and which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History Rocheport was a trading post for both settlers and Native Americans. After the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition to explore the western territories. On June 7, 1804, their journey led them to the convergence of the Missouri River and Moniteau Creek near the future settlement of Rocheport. US 67 (MO)
U.S. Route 67 (US 67) is the portion of a north-south highway in Missouri that starts at the Arkansas state line south of Neelyville and ends at the Illinois state line northeast of West Alton. Route description Going from south to north, US 67 enters Missouri at the Arkansas state line. About north of the state line, it intersects US 160. At the southwest corner of Poplar Bluff, Business Route 67 goes into Poplar Bluff while US 67 bypasses Poplar Bluff to the west on a freeway-grade highway. It then joins US 60 at the northwest corner of Poplar Bluff. Both 60 and 67 then follow a four-lane route to an interchange about northwest of Poplar Bluff, where US 60 heads west toward Springfield while US 67 heads north to St. Louis. Callao is a city in Macon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 251 at the 2020 census. History Callao was laid out in 1858, a year before the railroad was extended to that point.
