Mississippi Highway 550 (MS 550) is a state highway connecting Union Church and Brookhaven in southern Mississippi. The road travels through Jefferson and Lincoln counties. Route description MS 550 begins at a Y-intersection with MS 28 in the community of Union Church, Jefferson County. The two-lane road heads southeast and later east through woodlands. The road crosses into Homochitto National Forest, enters Lincoln County, and crosses the Homochitto River. MS 550 winds through the national forest and reaches the settlement of Caseyville before formally exiting the forest's boundary. Continuing southeast, the road passes through more open fields, reaching the unincorporated community of Loyd Star (formerly known as Redstar) and the attendance center (school) of the same name. Union Church, Mississippi
Union Church is an unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, Mississippi, United States. History The community of Union Church was formed primarily by a group of Scotch settlers who left North Carolina around 1805 for the promise of fertile land to be farmed on the eastern banks of the Mississippi River. The town was originally called Scotch Settlement. The founding families were headed by George Torrey, his son Dougald Torrey, Laughlin Currie and Robert Willis. A post office first began operating under the name Union Church in 1842. On April 28, 1863, Grierson's Raid was checked in a skirmish at Union Church. Brookhaven, Mississippi
Brookhaven is a small city in Lincoln County, Mississippi, United States, south of the state capital of Jackson. The population was 12,520 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County. It was named after the town of Brookhaven, New York, by founder Samuel Jayne in 1818. History Brookhaven is located in what was formerly territory of the Choctaw. The city was founded in 1818 by Samuel Jayne from New York, who named it after the town of Brookhaven on Long Island. Most of the Choctaw were forced out of Mississippi in the 1830s under Indian Removal, and were given lesser land in Indian Territory. The railroad was constructed through Brookhaven in 1858. It connected Brookhaven with New Orleans to the south and Memphis to the north. Mississippi Highway 28 (MS 28) is a state highway in south-central Mississippi, United States, that runs east–west from U.S. Highway 84 (US 84) west of Laurel to US 61/ MS 33 in Fayette. It travels approximately , serving Jefferson, Copiah, Simpson, Smith, and Jones counties. MS 28 is a largely two-lane, paved road that travels east and west across central Mississippi. The route does have several dangerous intersections and sharp curves, the most notable being the intersection with MS 37 in Taylorsville and the intersection with MS 35 in Mize. Homochitto National Forest is a U.S. National Forest in southwestern Mississippi comprising . In the mid-1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began reforestation of the area and developing a system of roadways and recreational areas. Homochitto River
The Homochitto River (pronounced "ho-muh-CHIT-uh") is a river in the U.S. State of Mississippi. It flows from its source in southwest Mississippi for about west and south, emptying into the Mississippi River between Natchez and Woodville. According to one source, Homochitto is a Choctaw name likely meaning "big red". Course The Homochitto River originates in several headwater tributaries along the border between Copiah County and Lincoln County. It flows west and then south through the Homochitto National Forest. After passing through Lincoln County the river enters Franklin County, still flowing generally south. Just before McCall Creek joins from the east, the Homochitto is crossed by two bridges, one for U.S. Route 84 and one for the Illinois Central Railroad.
