Mississippi Highway 495 (MS 495) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi running just under in length. Traveling through northern Lauderdale County and western Kemper County, it was created in 1957 and has remained on its original alignment since then. Route description MS 495 begins at the settlement of Bailey at a T-intersection with MS 493. The two-lane road briefly heads west before turning to the north. It passes small housing developments, individual houses, and churches as it heads through rural northwestern Lauderdale County. At Center Hill, MS 495 passes Center Hill Martin Road which provides access to Okatibbee Dam and its associated park and lake, a gas station, and West Lauderdale Elementary School. Mississippi Highway 16 (MS 16) is a state highway in central Mississippi. It runs east–west for , from the Mississippi Delta region to the Alabama state line. MS 16 serves 8 counties: Issaquena, Sharkey, Yazoo, Humphreys, Madison, Leake, Neshoba, and Kemper. Mississippi Highway 397 (MS 397) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. Running generally in a southeast to northwest direction, it is signed north--south traveling from the De Kalb vicinity at MS 16 to Louisville at MS 14. Route description The state highway begins west of De Kalb along MS 16. MS 397 heads northwest through barren forest land as a two-lane speed limit highway. First, an access road to Kemper Lake intersects the highway, later Sinai Road branches off the highway providing access to a small settlement. Naval Air Station Meridian or NAS Meridian is a military airport located 11 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi in Lauderdale County and Kemper County, and is one of the Navy's two jet strike pilot training facilities. History On July 16, 1957, the first shovel of earth was thrown, marking the beginning of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS), which was commissioned July 19, 1961. Captain W.F. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Concurrent numbering can become very common in jurisdictions that allow it. Okatibbee Dam
Okatibbee Dam is a dam in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The earthen gravity dam was constructed in 1968 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers with a height of 72 feet and a length of 6620 at its crest. It impounds Okatibbee Creek for flood control and municipal drinking water. The dam is owned and operated by the Corps of Engineers. It begins in the northernmost part of Meridian and travels through rural northern Lauderdale County and western Kemper County. The highway south of MS 16 is signed and maintained by the state while the portion north of it is unsigned and is maintained by Kemper County. Route description MS 493 begins in the northern reaches of Meridian's city limits in the Poplar Springs neighborhood. The highway begins along Poplar Springs Drive on a curve where state maintenance begins along the road. Heading north, the highway first widens from two to four lanes in width, and passes through a commercial district passing numerous businesses and strip malls.
