Mississippi Highway 493 (MS 493) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi for a length of . It begins in the northernmost part of Meridian and travels through rural northern Lauderdale County and western Kemper County. The highway south of MS 16 is signed and maintained by the state while the portion north of it is unsigned and is maintained by Kemper County. Route description MS 493 begins in the northern reaches of Meridian's city limits in the Poplar Springs neighborhood. The highway begins along Poplar Springs Drive on a curve where state maintenance begins along the road. Heading north, the highway first widens from two to four lanes in width, and passes through a commercial district passing numerous businesses and strip malls. As the road leaves the city limits, it narrows first to a two-lane road with a center turn lane, then to only two lanes. It heads into more rural surroundings with woods and farmlands. Naval Air Station Meridian or NAS Meridian is a military airport located 11 miles northeast of Meridian, Mississippi in Lauderdale County and Kemper County, and is one of the Navy's two jet strike pilot training facilities. History On July 16, 1957, the first shovel of earth was thrown, marking the beginning of the Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS), which was commissioned July 19, 1961. Captain W.F. Traveling through northern Lauderdale County and western Kemper County, it was created in 1957 and has remained on its original alignment since then. Kemper County is a county located on the central eastern border of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,456. Its county seat is De Kalb.
