Marita Lindahl
Marita Lindahl (17 October 1938 – 21 March 2017) was a Finnish model and beauty queen who won the 1957 Miss World beauty pageant, after being crowned Miss Finland 1957 by Miss Finland 1956, Sirpa Helena Koivu. She became the first woman from Finland to win the title and the third Nordic woman; after Sweden had won the two first contests. The pageant was held in London, England. Lindahl was described by pageant director Eric Morley as having "the haunting beauty and intrigue of a Greta Garbo". The first runner-up was Lilian Madsen from Denmark, second runner-up Adele Kruger from South Africa and third runner-up Jacqueline Tapia from Tunisia. Miss World
Miss World is the oldest existing international beauty pageant. It was created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951. Since his death in 2000, Morley's widow, Julia Morley, has co-chaired the pageant. Along with Miss Universe, Miss International, and Miss Earth, it is one of the Big Four international beauty pageants. The Suez Canal ( arz, قَنَاةُ ٱلسُّوَيْسِ, ') is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez and dividing Africa and Asia. Miss World 1955, the 5th edition of the Miss World pageant, was held on 20 October 1955 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, United Kingdom. 21 contestants competed for the crown. Eunice Gayson crowned Susana Duijm of Venezuela as the new Miss World. The previous year's Miss World, Antigone Costanda of Egypt, did not attend because of hostilities between Egypt and United Kingdom over Suez Canal. That was the first time Venezuela won the title of Miss World. This was the first time that a winner had been crowned with the crown on her head. Duijm also placed Top 15 in Miss Universe 1955. Charlotte Sheffield
Charlotte Sheffield (September 1, 1936 - April 15, 2016) was an American actress, model and beauty pageant titleholder best known as Miss USA 1957. After winning the Miss Utah USA crown, Sheffield, from Salt Lake City, Utah was first runner-up in the Miss USA competition. A day later, the winner, Mary Leona Gage was stripped of her title when it emerged that she was not only too young to compete (18 years old; the age limit was 21), but was also married with two children. Sheffield ascended as Miss USA, but was not allowed to compete for the Miss Universe 1957 crown. By the time Gage's deceit was discovered, Sheffield had already missed the preliminary competition. Sheffield went on to compete at the 1957 Miss World pageant, but failed to place. Charlotte then married Richard Maxfield and had 8 children, four boys and four girls. Leila Williams
Leila Williams (born 1937) is a former British beauty queen and television presenter. She was one of the original presenters of ''Blue Peter'', working on the programme from 1958 to 1962. Career In 1957 Williams won the Miss Great Britain title. The following year she became the first female ''Blue Peter'' presenter, co-presenting with Christopher Trace. Williams left ''Blue Peter'' at the start of 1962, after being made redundant by Clive Parkhurst, a newly appointed producer, with whom she did not get on. Williams recalled "he could not find anything for me to do", and in October, Williams did not appear for six editions, and was eventually sacked, leaving Trace on his own or with one-off presenters. Petra Schürmann-Freund (; 15 September 1933 – 14 January 2010) was a German actress, model, TV announcer and beauty queen who won Miss World 1956. Biography Schürmann won the 1956 Miss World contest, representing West Germany. she is the only German to win this title, with the exception of Gabriella Brum who won the title in 1980 but resigned one day later. The pageant was held in London, United Kingdom. Schürmann finished only third in the Miss Germany pageant, but was chosen to represent her country in London because of her better knowledge of English. At that time Schürmann was studying philosophy and history of the arts at the universities of Bonn and Cologne. After winning her Miss World title, she continued her studies in Munich.
