Cesária Évora
Cesária Évora GCIH (; 27 August 194117 December 2011), more commonly known as Cize, was a Cape Verdean singer-songwriter. She received a Grammy Award in 2004 for her album '' Voz d'Amor''. Nicknamed the "Barefoot Diva" for performing without shoes, she was known as the "Queen of Morna". Évora began singing as a young woman in bars in her hometown of Mindelo, and came to international prominence in the 1990s. When she was seven years old her father, Justino da Cruz Évora, who was a part-time musician, died, and at the age of ten she was placed in an orphanage, as her mother Dona Joana could not raise all six children. "''Sodade''" is a Cape Verdean song written in the 1950s by Armando Zeferino Soares, and best popularized by Cesária Évora on her 1992 album ''Miss Perfumado''. The name is the Cape Verdean Creole variant of the Portuguese term ''saudade''. Teófilo Chantre
Teófilo Chantre (born 1964) is a Cape Verdean musician, first noted for his decades long collaboration with singer Cesaría Évora, and later for his own recordings. Life He was born on the island of São Nicolau, growing up with his grandparents on São Vicente Island after his parents left to find work in Europe, a common occurrence in the country. His father ended up in Rotterdam and his mother settled in Paris after a time in Hamburg. He moved to be with his mother at age 14, but he missed his grandparents, leading to an attachment to the concept of ''saudade'', the Portuguese word for longing and present in much Cabo Verde music. He learned the guitar at age 16 and continues to live in France. Career Chantre first became known for his work composing songs for Cape Verde singer Cesária Évora, who he met in Paris in the 1990s, after a concert both performed in. Manuel d' Novas (February 24, 1938 — September 28, 2009) was a Cape Verdean poet and composer. Biography Manuel Jesus Lopes was born in Penha da França, one of the neighbourhoods of Ribeira Grande on the island of Santo Antão, he became one of the most important poets and composers of Cape Verde. His music is known all over the world, through performers like Cesária Évora, Bana and others. He lived in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. He visited 35 Rua de Moeda where other Cape Verdean musicians visited including Bana. He took part in the 2003 Baía das Gatas Music Festival. Manuel died on September 27, 2009, from a stroke he suffered for three years that started in Portugal, after staying at the hospital named Baptista de Sousa for about a week. Armando Zeferino Soares, (1920 in São Nicolau, Cape Verde – April 3, 2007) was a Capeverdean composer, author of the famous song ''Sodade''. He was born in Praia Branca in the island of São Nicolau and worked there as a salesman. He had several disputes due to the authorship of ''Sodade'' with other composers, including Amândio Cabral and Luís Morais. Finally, in December 2006, the court declared Armando Soares the author of the famous song. Michel Joseph Martelly (; born 12 February 1961) is a Haitian musician and politician who was the President of Haiti from May 2011 until February 2016. He was sanctioned by the Canadian Government for his involvement in human rights violations and supporting criminal gangs on 17 November 2022. Martelly was one of Haiti's best-known musicians for over a decade, going by the stage name Sweet Micky. Ramiro Mendes (born 1961) is a Cape Verdean musician, singer and author. Together with his brother João, he formed the Mendes Brothers. Biography Ramiro Mendes was born in the small village of Palonkon on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Together with his brother, João, they immigrated to the United States in 1978. He studied Commercial Arranging and Film Scoring at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Francisco Xavier da Cruz, also known as B. Leza or Beleza (earlier Portuguese form: Beléza) (December 3, 1905 – July 14, 1958) was a Cape Verdean writer, composer and singer of morna music.. Biography Da Cruz was born in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. B. Leza has innovated in the morna genre and frequently used the passage cords (known as the Brazilian halftone, the jargon used by Cape Verdean musicians).
