Miss Europe 1929 was the second annual Miss Europe pageant and the first under French journalist Maurice de Waleffe. Maurice de Waleffe also created in 1920, what in 1927 had become the Miss France pageant. Miss Hungary, Böske Simon, won the pageant title and became the first Jewish women to be crowned Miss Europe. Böske Simon (1909—1970) was a Jewish Hungarian beauty queen, the first winner of the title Miss Hungary (1929) and the winner of the Miss Europe 1929 pageant, held in Paris. The International Pageant of Pulchritude, also known as Miss Universe or the International Beauty Contest, was a beauty contest that began in 1920, featuring contestants from multiple nations. This pageant originated the title "Miss Universe" and was the first international contest. Lisl Goldarbeiter (23 March 1909 – 14 December 1997) was an Austrians, Austrian model and actress, who in 1929, became the first and only Austrian to win the International Pageant of Pulchritude, Miss Universe title. She also participated in the Miss Europe 1929, Miss Europe competition in 1929. Life Goldarbeiter was born on 23 March 1909, in Vienna, Austria. She was born in a middle-class Austro-Hungarians, Austro-Hungarian Jews, Jewish family. She was the daughter of Izidor Goldarbeiter (b.1877), a fashion dealer from Szeged, Hungary, and, Aloisia née Schimek (1884–1967). On 11 June 1929, Goldarbeiter became the first-ever non-American to win the Miss Universe beauty pageant, which was held in Galveston, Texas. A beauty pageant is a competition that has traditionally focused on judging and ranking the physical attributes of the contestants. Miss Europe is a beauty pageant for European women from all over Europe. It was established in February 1927 by Fanamet, the European distributor of Paramount, as a one-off event where the winner was to star in a film directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. After the initial twelve-person jury couldn't decide between 10 contestants, a runoff election was held where Murnau chose the winner. Murnau ended up choosing Štefica Vidačić of Yugoslavia as the winner and the first ever Miss Europe. Miss Europe was later re-established in December 1928 by French journalist Maurice de Waleffe (1874–1946), who also created, in 1920, what by 1927 had become the Miss France pageant. Miss Europe 1927, was the first ever edition Miss Europe pageant and the only edition under Fanamet, the European distributor of Paramount. It was first held at Sofiensaal in Vienna, Austria on February 5, 1927. After the original panel of 12 judges couldn't decide the winner, a "runoff" was held on March 15, 1927 in Berlin, Germany. The winner was chosen by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau who then starred in a movie directed by him.
