Misery Me
''Misery Me'' is a 1959 Australian television movie, or rather a live television play, which aired on ABC. It was a satirical comedy written by British playwright Dennis Cannan and had originally been a stage play. At the time, most TV plays presented on Australian television were adaptations of overseas stage plays. It is likely that the experience gained from these productions allowed ABC to later produce dramatic programs with more local interest, such as ''Stormy Petrel''. The program was originally shown in Sydney (on ABN-2) on 15 July 1959. A kinescope ("telerecording") was made of the program and later shown in Melbourne on 5 August 1959 (on ABV-2). In 1959, two additional ABC stations began operations, in Adelaide and Brisbane respectively, and it is not known of the program was also shown in these two cities. Alan Burke (director)
Alan Burke (18 November 1923 – 28 August 2007) was an Australian writer and film director and producer. His credits include the musical ''Lola Montez''. Biography Burke was born in the Hawthorn suburb of Melbourne, Victoria in 1923. Burke was interested in theatre from a young age and began writing plays. One of them ''Follow Suit'' debuted in 1941. According to ''The Argus'' "Alan is aged only 17 years, but has been turning out plays so prolifically for the past 4 or 5 years that he must now be reckoned a veteran playwright. Most surprising of all is that there's nothing "youthful" in his writings. Most of his efforts have had all the sophistication and wit of a Coward." He served in the army from 1941 until 1946. ''Black Limelight'' is a stage play by Gordon Sherry, which has been adapted for television at least four times. However, at least three of these adaptations are now lost. Plot Peter Charrington is a married commercial traveller who has been having an affair with a girl. When she is found murdered he is accused of the crime and his wife Mary has to prove his innocence. 1952 version A version aired as part of British series BBC '' Sunday Night Theatre''. Cast included Jack Allen, Victor Baring, Gladys Boot, Fanny Carby, Patrick Desmond, Nora Gordon, John Howlett, Barry Letts, Alun Owen, Margaret Rawlings, John Robinson and Brian Wilde. Two performances were broadcast, on 1 June 1952 and a few days later on 5 June. ''Bodgie'' is an Australian television movie, or rather a live television play with filmed sequences, which aired on ABC during 1959. Originally broadcast on 12 August 1959 in Sydney on ABN-2, a kinescope recording was made of the program and shown in Melbourne on ABV-2 on 2 September 1959. At the time, most live plays broadcast on Australian television were simply performances of overseas plays. ''Bodgie'' was based on a British story written by an Australian, Rex Rientis, which was adapted to be relocated to Australia by another Australian writer, Alan Seymour. It is not known if the kinescope recording of the broadcast is still extant or not. Plot Kenny is a "bodgie" who lives in Kings Cross with his ex-convict father (Douglas Kelly). Kenny has a girlfriend (Lola Brooks) and is forced into blackmail of a politician (Nigel Lovell). He tries to protect a woman (Thelma Scott) and murder results.
