Misaki Emura
Misaki Emura ( ja, 江村美咲, born 20 November 1998) is a Japanese fencer. She is a two-time gold medalist in the women's sabre event at the World Fencing Championships (2022 and 2023). Career In 2014, she won the gold medal in the mixed team event at the Summer Youth Olympics held in Nanjing, China. A month later, she competed in the women's individual sabre and women's team sabre events at the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea. In 2017, she competed in the women's sabre event at the World Fencing Championships held in Leipzig, Germany. She won one of the bronze medals in the women's individual sabre event at the 2017 Summer Universiade held in Taipei, Taiwan. She also won the gold medal in the women's team sabre event. The women's sabre event at the 2020 Summer Olympics is took place on 26 July 2021 at the Makuhari Messe. 36 fencers from 18 nations competed. Background This was the 5th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics since being introduced in 2004. The reigning Olympic champion was Yana Egorian of Russia. The reigning World Champion was Olha Kharlan of Ukraine (also the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist). The 2018 World Champion was Sofia Pozdniakova of Russia. The 2017 World Fencing Championships was held at the Arena Leipzig in Leipzig, Germany from 19 to 26 July 2017. During the championships there was a demonstration of wheelchair fencing. Fencing at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 17 to 20 August at the Nanjing International Expo Center in Nanjing, China. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter a maximum of 6 competitors, 3 per each gender and 1 per each weapon. 60 places will be decided at the 2014 Cadet World Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from 3–12 April 2014. The top 4 European, top 2 American, top 2 Asian/Oceania and top African fencers from each event will qualify. Furthermore, the top 2 Oceania fencers and the top fencer from Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe across all events not yet qualified will also qualify. As hosts, China was given the maximum quota should they not qualify, but declined to use those extra spots and a further 12, 6 in each gender was initially given by the Tripartite Commission, but only nine spots were used. Fencing
Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, singlestick, appeared in the 1904 Olympics but was dropped after that and is not a part of modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics.
