Miriam Nathan-Roberts
Miriam Nathan-Roberts (May 14, 1942, Pittsburgh, PA - August 21, 2018, Berkeley, CA) was an American textile artist who specialized in Studio Art Quilting. Her work was centered on abstract "illusions of three dimensions on flat or semi-flat surfaces." Nathan-Roberts received many awards at the Quilt National over the years, including Best in Show (1982, 1999), the People's Choice Award (1985), and the Juror's Award of Merit (2013); she served as Juror in 2005. Her work Changing Planes' (1992) was featured in ''The Twentieth Century's Best American Quilts: Celebrating 100 Years of the Art of Quiltmaking'', a 1999 exhibition and catalogue. The PBS documentary A Century of Quilts: America in Cloth' (PBS Home Video, 2001–06) was based on this exhibition and Nathan-Roberts was interviewed in part 1 "Moments in Time." Studio Art Quilt Associates
The Studio Art Quilt Associates, abbreviated as SAQA, is a leading non-profit advocacy group for art quilts based in Hebron, Connecticut, in the United States. Formation In the book, ''American Quilts: The Democratic Art, 1780-2007'', Robert Shaw states, "Contemporary quilts were rarely seen in major art publications or in museum and gallery exhibitions, and critical writing about unconventional quilts was almost nonexistent." Shaw further writes, "Realizing that they could not wait for attention to come to them, artist-quiltmakers began to take matters into their own hands. In 1989, California quiltmaker Yvonne Porcella founded Studio Art Quilt Associates, a nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to "serving artists working in the art quilt medium." Quilt National
The Quilt National is a juried biennial exhibition of contemporary quilt art, first held in 1979. The primary exhibition is held at the Dairy Barn Art Center in Athens, Ohio in odd-numbered years. The exhibition includes between 80-90 quilts. After the conclusion of the Quilt National, selections of the exhibits also tour the country. It is both the largest and one of the most prestigious shows of its kind. History and format The Quilt National was first held in 1979, and was the first major exhibition of quilt art in the United States, and has been held biennially ever since. It was also the first major event held in the Dairy Barn Arts Center space, which at the time, was still largely an unaltered dairy barn. Founder Nancy Crow, along with Françoise Barnes and Virginia Randles organized the event, accepting applications from 96 artists, totaling 360 pieces.
