Miriam Bucher
Miriam Bell Bucher (1912- 2002) was a pioneering 20th-century female writer, editor, and director of documentary and educational films primarily based on international topics. Career Early in her career, Miriam Bell was a film critic at the Miami Daily News. She then worked as an assistant to Pare Lorentz, well-known documentary director of films such as T''he Plow that Broke the Plains''. Together with her husband, filmmaker Jules Bucher, whom she married in 1940, she worked with the Motion Picture Division of the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, producing numerous films about South America, often collaborating with filmmaker Julien Bryan. Pare Lorentz (December 11, 1905 – March 4, 1992) was an American filmmaker known for his film work about the New Deal. Born Leonard MacTaggart Lorentz in Clarksburg, West Virginia he was educated at Buckhannon High School, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and West Virginia University. As a young film critic in both New York City and Hollywood, Lorentz spoke out against censorship in the film industry. As the most influential documentary filmmaker of the Great Depression, Lorentz was the leading American advocate for government-sponsored documentary films. His service as a filmmaker for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II was formidable, including technical films, documentation of bombing raids, and synthesizing raw footage of Nazi atrocities for an educational film on the Nuremberg Trials. Julien Hequembourg Bryan (23 May 1899 in Titusville, Pennsylvania – 20 October 1974) was an American photographer, filmmaker, and documentarian. He is best known for documenting the daily life in Poland, Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany between 1935 and 1939, in the leadup to and early days of the Second World War. He was honored with Zasłużony dla Kultury Polskiej" ("Merit for Polish culture") during his last visit in Poland (1974) for showing the truth about the Invasion of Poland. His documentary film ''Siege'' reported on Poland's defense of its capital against Nazi Germany in September 1939.
